Evening all.

Posted this to mp3/mp4 but answers from Mr Everard didn't suggest a solution, so I thought I might try again here.

I have about 40 gig of music in my i-tunes account on my toshiba satelite with 160gb hard drive and would like to know if it is possible to connect this to the Denon dm38 which I have in my conservatory for bbqs, parties etc.

I thought I might be able to connect via the usb port on the front of the Denon, but Mr E claims this is not possible, though doesn't explain why.

Assuming this method doesn't work, can anyone suggest a method that would work ?

Thanks.

Cliff

Evening,

Mr Everard is indeed correct and probably doesn't suggest a solution as you don't ask for one in your original post!

It won't work with the laptop because in simple terms it would have to recognise the Denon as a USB speaker which would require drivers etc that it doesn't have.

As you say your music is stored in i-tunes do you have an iPod? If so you can link that up to the Denon via the USB front port.

If not you can do one of the following depending on what outputs you have on the laptop, get a phono to phono lead to run from the laptop to one of the inputs on the rear of the Denon. Get a mini jack to phono lead from laptop headphone output to an input on the rear of the Denon and finally mini jack to mini jack lead to run from headphone output on the laptop to rear input on the Denon.

IPod via USB is digital so would rely on the Denon for sound quality, all the others are analogue outputs from the laptop so would rely on the soundcard on the laptop for sound quality.

Hope this helps.

Thankyou Bezza.

A straightforward answer to my problem, I have a few leads around the place and am looking forward to trying out a few configurations.

You're probably right, I could have phrased my opening question a bit more clearly, but I would have thought the gist of what I was after was fairly obvious.

Sometimes soliciting help from certain users of this site is like pulling teeth, strange for a forum set up to help and advise the inexpierienced.

Anyway, many thanks.

Cliff.

Hi Cliff,

The USB port is only really useful for small USB drives.

The easiest way to hook up a laptop to your Denon is using a cable with 3.5 mm jack plugs. Connect from the headphone out socket on your laptop to the mp3 player input on the front of your Denon. You can then play any audio (iTunes WMP or Spotify) from your laptop on the Denon.

If you buy the cable from ThatCable it will probably cost you less than £5 to set up.

Thanks Wightknight.

Had a 3.5 mm to 3.5 mm cable to hook my ipod up to the input in my car so used that and it does indeed work, now my friends and I can browse my itunes library selecting any song at will.

I'm very pleased with the sound quality too, this was the reason that I was initially hoping to hook up using the usb as I thought the sound may be better with a digital connection but it seems fine to me.

Many thanks.

Cliff.
