I traded in a lot of my music Blu-rays and 4K Blu-rays and made more than £400!

As a lot of you know I had bought a lot of my 4K Blu-rays and music Blu-rays on AppleTV to listen and watch again, so I decided to trade in my actual 4K Blu-rays and a lot of my music Blu-rays. I am using my home cinema system less and less to watch actual 4K Blu-rays and music Blu-rays so I decided to sell them to CEX. I made just over £300 and am really happy.

I now watch my home cinema system through Sky a lot more with having Sky Q and I have a lot of my movies at my finger tips on there. I also still own the Blu-ray movies too and had never sold them because they weren’t worth anything and a lot of my 4K Blu-rays were still sealed and I had never watched!

Apple TV is great for buying cheaper music and 4K movies and I just turn the volume up on my amp and is still good quality. I also listen through Apple Music for my system just to listen to music and YouTube too.

At my age I am not to fussed about quality anymore and I know watching and listening through my home cinema system it will still sound and look good but not as good quality especially for sound like DTS Master Audio HD from the Blu-rays. Picture I can definitely live with less quality.

With the 4K Blu-rays I don’t have Dolby Atmos soundtracks because I only have a 5.1 setup so it wasn’t an issue there really, and for DTS-X I never used that either. I have kept a lot of my Blu-ray movies with DTS Master Audio and Dolby True HD, I suppose I should have kept my Guns N Roses Appetite for Democracy 3D Blu-ray for the DTS Master Audio soundtrack but in the end wasn’t bothered because I have it on Apple TV, same goes for a few others.

I have noticed there are a few advantages to Apple Music and that is that it is more noise friendly for people in the house, the subwoofer doesn’t work as hard, and the drums and guitar solos don’t go right through you. And in my opinion of all this of course is that vocals sound a lot more clearer and louder without all of the instruments being so pronounced.

You can just listen and be more chilled out with it.

A lot of the music I am listening to on Apple TV seems to be Dolby Digital 5.1. Picture quality on Slash Made in Stoke is better on Apple TV than it is on Blu-ray.

I can’t see me using my 4K Blu-ray player anymore, so I have taken it out of my signature. Streaming from now on for me. I have lived with the likes of DTS Master Audio for 18 years, I need a fresh change of sound now, even if it is lesser quality.

Hi Bill, just watched Top Gun on Apple TV and the amp was saying Dolby Atmos for the soundtrack but I was wondering what this converts down into because I don’t have a Dolby Atmos speaker setup? When I did turn the amp off it reverted back to PCM and then switch off, so I was wondering was that what I was listening to? Cheers.

Edit: These are all saying Dolby Atmos sounds better than non Dolby Atmos if only your amp does Atmos and not your speaker package:

No one seems to have a name for it apart from what you said in lossy? So I am basically listening to Dolby Atmos but without the height speakers, so should I still say I am listening to Dolby Atmos for example?

Dolby Atmos is available in both lossless & lossy formats.

Most receivers etc.(Assuming they can decode Atmos) can create phantom channels to give the illusion of having more speakers, but to be honest, except for a phantom centre channel , I find the rest to sound very poor, and are best when turned off. (Its all down to personal preference, you might think it is the best thing since sliced bread)

I don’t think it does convert. I think it just plays the 5.1 out of the 5.1.2 (for example).

I only use 5.1 currently but I do find Atmos mixes sound better. Personally I find that the rear channels are used a lot more in Atmos mixes.

However, I would also simply put this down to audio engineers making better use of the rear channels these days rather than it being a direct result of Atmos.
