How would you define an Audiophile?

I think we had similiar threads but it is a conversation to be had, particularly in light of the Rise of the Mockaudiophiles (dun dun da da), where their common placing is to uproot our common understanding of all things HiFi and it leaves you wondering, is there some common thread that links us all to this hobby called HiFi or are they motivated by their own elevation that theirs is the true ground and the rest of us are sheep leading the sheep?

Anyway that really wasn't the question, I just wanted to rant like grumpy old men like to do, about certain quarters, who feel their view is the ONLY view, which I may add they're perfectly entitled to.

I don't want to make this the Jedi Strikes back, Luke I'm your father.........Nooo. Enough of me stirring the faeces pot, I think it's truly best I'll steer away from this 🙂

How would you describe an Audiophile, do they still exist or is it just a nonsense word that's lost its meaning over a course of time.
Here's a quote I found interesting.

“Audiophiles don't use their equipment to listen to music. They use music to listen to their equipment”
Alan Parsons

I think it depends upon the views of the person making the definition, and I think there are two broad answers:

- A nerdy type who is far more interested in their gear than anything else, and who will choose music that highlights how good it is, regardless of how soulless and dull that music is. They probably look forward to Russ Andrews's catalogue arriving.

- Someone whose love of music is enhanced by tying to get it to sound either as close to reality as practicable within budget, or as close to their personal tastes as possible.

In my mind I'm the latter, but others may take a different view...

An audiophile are those who like to show off their systems with no interest in the music in which they were designed to convey.

A member of Mrs. Ps family is exactly like that. He drives a Model S Tesla, not because he wants to be environmentally aware -- he has two holidays a year abroad... and he flies everywhere. 😡😡

They like to be seen but not heard, whereas with me I'm a music first person: I like to be heard and not seen.

Bleat over.

really nice, where can i get one? the SL-1200 was only after 2010 that was considered a audiophile turntable as even technics as better home use turntables , and a year before i could only sell two SL-1210mk II with two sets of cartridges and stylus for 500€ , if i had waited i would have sold them at least for two times more money.
Met through out my life what can be called real audiophiles and audiophiles wanna be with surreal opinions about music hearing.
I have a dutch friend that buys real expensive components and after trying them and not the quality expected he offers me them , it´s a source of any type of components priced very high, lucky me, the best modern equipment i own came from him and the oldest from my father(he died 4 years ago) a flood of extremelly good components and thousands of perfectelly kept lp records filled my storage rooms. i have a brother and a sister that live in the U.K. and they told me, "i don´t want old stuff, keep it all " both opinion

The basic meaning of audiophile or how I interpret it, is a person who is very interested and enthusiastic about equipment for playing recorded sound, and its quality, driven by a quest for sonic perfection.

The term was first expressed in the late 40s and early 50s, when music enthusiasts were wanting more from their gramophone systems, seeking to replicate the live concert experience from the comfort of their own homes.

In essence, despite the developments in technology, people are still doing pretty much the same thing, the only thing that has changed are the social connotations, as described by other posters.

I think Alan Parsons hit the nail on the head with that.
i think all bands denominated Yath rock are in that style that i didn´t knew about it, like christofer cross or chicago, starting in late 70´s as strangelly Steely Dan seem to lead the style, so to speak , as i have early lp´s that have nothing to do with it as also Chicago first releases

I think he really did.

Just to play the devil's advocate; there is a tendency in some of us to be righteous about certain things, it's the music and nothing but the music, so help me God!

But come 'on cast the first stone if you haven't sinned?

Who hasn't taken a shine to their new Hifi, dusting it off, staring at it from different angles, not noticing your girlfriend is stark naked in the other room.

🙂

Indeed, anyone who's ever rewound a porn video to identify the speakers behind a sprawled out solo female, has a real problem.
....I would imagine.

i think i never left my girlfriend or just a girl that i knew that night earlier, standing naked in other room to just noticing the way my better system sounds or it´s diferencies in sound depending from where your hearing it,

music is played without a doubt, even if in a hurry i have a sound system by the side of my bed, no turntable but all other sources i have. It can last hours all the work done and it´s good to have a soundtrack for all the time dedicated to such a pleasurable task,

this being not today as it was more common when younger and the city where i live being converted to a university campus and there wasn´t enough men,

to deliver the asking task each day of the week for many years, when 17 i felt the change like if it happen with Biblic porpotions,

this when Europe population was constituted by a great % of young population , even when camping ,there wasn´t enough room for all backpackers coming mainly from North European countries ,

in camping parks there was covering the silent hours a new info. saying no silent hours in this camping , i remenber being awaked and thinking by the noise and lights that it was around 11.00 a.m. but when looking to the rist watch it was 4.00a.m.
, this after the day before having driven for more than 1.500 km´s to have 3 weeks of resting from all year work

Interesting how they speculated that your separate devices might be out of phase.
All the old drivers I've ever seen have always had their polarity marked - but no pre-stereo listeners had any need to worry about phasing.
I guess you´re correct, older devices had plugs , already positive and nagative already diferenciated,

Pioner had it´s own shaped plugs for the speakers conection at least ´till 1974, as Din sockets for each device, now rearelly seen,

but still released with input/output Din Plugs like that litle amplifier, streamer refered here on a forum with a litle size not standart,

i myself had a 60´s component system ,receiver ,turntable and speakers from Pioneer and this last also from Philips as the open reel deck had both RCA and din sockets also professional plugs at the time like instruments one´s ,
it was a Akai and a 1970 model. some years ago i conected it both rca and Din sockets to listen if there was a improvement with Din Sockets or RCA´s, didn´t notice any diference,

after a older man explained that in the 70´s when several dutch or deutch brands were using the Din sockets he told me that had a silver positive cable, this to say they weren´t bad.

🤣😂🤣
in my mid 20´s i drove only old cars, prior to 75 included, i used to record cassettes with several diferent songs and one day noticed the porn vhs tapes had a real hi-fi sound and started to record bit´s inbetween songs but not every song and it sounded really loud and perfect in my car,

normally girls would be on it and due to a very narrow roads in the city center where the night clubs were a lot of people were just next to the car, walking ,

making some girls having a litle more rosed chicks, a girlfriend once got out of the car and laughing call me a pervert but i didn´t even saw porn movies ,

when younger , 14 i used to make girls sessions and separated boys sessions , and the girls were the ones to ask me it , not i telling them they had to see it, was the first to have a VCR .

In Portugal only in early 80´s we had colour tv, so videos were a lot late in what to have in a living room,

I can remenber the first movie i had at home made me relate it to the beach , as Copertone was a known brand of a lotion to increase your tan, but in my first porn movie at home it´s wasn´t in use to it´s original purpose, almost like a Copertone advertising

the conections were made with RCA´s or Euro Av in stereo, it was a stereo tv with a already stereo vcr from Akai as the first was a V-2000 also from Philips, but returned(it was a French movie)

I guess it's in the description 'Audio'; a person who is passionate about high-fidelity sound reproduction and the equipment that produces it (Google AI ... audiophile)

It's more about gear than music. You really do not require High fidelity audio stuff to enjoy music. Ask millions of women.
