I`ve just done a quick check on how much it would cost to replace my kit with new like for like and it comes to a rather eye watering sum of around £9000 :O .My home insurance is up for renewal next month and I`m now wondering if I should have special cover for the hi-fi.

If disaster struck and the hi-fi was destroyed do you think the insurance company would class it as one item or would it be viewed as seperate items,i.e. amp, speakers, dac etc.?

Have a look at John Lewis home insurance. They have a much more realistic view on the value of valuables in modern homes. They are not dirt cheap bu the level of cover is excellent.

home insurance will cover single items upto 1500 pounds as standard these days , but you did to name them if they are over that

My Royal & Sun Alliance policy allows me to specify values for other groups of items other than general 'contents'. So I have my 'Technology & Entertainment Items' as a separate group.
If you start adding up TV's, hifi, HC, computers etc, the total value can come as a bit of a surprise.

They would be viewed as separate items. They have a separate box, receipt, name etc. It's irrelevant how you use them.

Check your policy and see whether hi-fi equipment is under contents or valuables. Also check your single article limit.

If in doubt phone the insurance company to ask.
