to do a firmware update,

switch the box off at the mains, press and hold the "back up" button and switch the mains back on whilst keeping the "back up" button pressed

after about 20 seconds all the lights on the box will come on,you can now let go of the back up button.

the box is now downloading the firmware takes about 20 minutes

when the box has finished downloading it will switch into standby mode leave for a couple of minutes then switch the box back on

job done

To get the current download as previously stated above.

Switch the box off at the mains.

Now hold the backup button on the box down and keep holding it down.

Switch the box on at the mains still holding the backup button down.

Yes it really does take some time so be patient.

After some time all the lights will become active on the front of the box, you can now release the backup button.

You will get a message on screen about the dowloading.

The only thing is - and no-one's mentioned this - the firmware upgrades are normally carried out automatically, often in the middle of the night. ÿYou know that something has happened because you switch on and find yourself watching the chameleon!

The auto downloads, that update your sky+hd ,are as stated are normally done overnight.

Your box being on channel 998 is normally an indication that something has changed or you've had a crashed box.

They sofware downloads are targeted at specific models, so if yours has not been updated, its in the line for an update whenever sky get round to it.

They only time you really need to carry out this manual update is if you have a replacement box and want to make sure you have the latest software.

Doing this manually when your box hasn't already updated automatically probably means that the latest software for you box is not in the transport stream yet. So the manual update won't get you the new software update yet either.
