How do you describe the sound of different manufacturers, by category?

I am interested to know what sound categories different Hifi Brands fall in to. For example, if you like the Arcam sound, what other brands are along the same lines.

So if I said,

the Arcam sound is laid back and smooth

and

the Naim sound is detailed and punchy

what other categories are there, and how do other brands fit in to them?

Think it could be useful when people are looking to change equipment and maybe venture across to a different brand.

arcam with monitor audio , smooth ?

arcam with spendor , warm ?

cyrus with monitor audio , bright ?

cyrus with spendor , neutral ?

isnt it the sound of components and speakers combined that is more relevant ?

Arcam with Monitor Audio and Musical fidelity = bright IMHO.

Depends on the listener's taste really.

Thaiman:House sound do change from model to model imo. (Although naim's sound seem to be the same since I started this hobby!)

Yeh thats what I was thinking. I dont believe you could put Naim and Arcam in the same category whatever speakers you had?
