Often find myself browsing home cinema pictures on the net for design ideas. When I see cinemas that seem to have everything there appears to be a million and one boxes stacked somewhere in a rack and was just wondering what they all were and how they improve the cinematic experince. Mine seems to work with just the three boxes.

Can anyone shed any light on this

Probably a bunch of sources and a processor with power amp/amps.

It's quite common in the US to use several different power amps. You'd then have a separate pre/pro. Might also have a delay box and an equaliser I guess.

Perhaps an active crossover?

Quite often these bespoke systems will have all sorts of lighting and control units for automation of say, electric curtains, Lurton lighting control and in some case multi room audio and video for sending around the hous/palace!!!
