i started off back in april with my yamaha avr and a pair of br5 floorstanders, movies obviously sounded better than my tv, but it was only when i added a centre and rears, which were my next additions, that movies really came to life.

the centre made the most difference, much better dialogue, when i finally added a sub it all sounded great, theres no way id go back to stereo sound for movies now, it would be lovely if some boffin could invent invisible speakers though

daveh75:What a pointless thread - I do what suits me and my situation, and couldn't care less what peoples thoughts are on the pros/cons of stereo v multichannel set-ups.

Pointless thread? Talk about a pointless post! Surely the point of a forum is to discuss pros and cons regardign different ideas.

Given max downed 12 cans of Guinness between dinner and his late-night pizza last night, stubbed toes may be the least of his problems...

Indeed. Running out of Guinness is a fate I wouldn't wish on my worst enemy.

Is it not the case that home cinema is being driven by the US market, where more and bigger is better. Jaxwired has commented on how hard it is to find hifi as opposed to av over there.

Ok i have a budget 5.1 system and i wasn't sure with all the 5.1 , i'm sure if i took it way now then i would miss it . I know playing Bad Company2 on the xbox it can prevent people sneaking up on me and you can get more of a direction of gun fire .

I did have the system at first setup in 2.1 at first and then you have an option to turn it into a 6 speaker front surround system which was a lot better than 2.1 and i still miss the way it could throw sound across the front soundstage .

Maybe the future is a soundbar with sub and 2 rears

I think the future would be some kind of in wall line array you don see, with one connection to it at its start point, and IB's for subs which are built into the home so again effectively invisible. Anything like that is going to be way off though. Ever wander where all that cracking hi quality sound comes from when they play music on the ships in Star Trek, with no speakers ;)

This is true. We get God knows how many enquiries from overseas because there's just nothing there - Australia, the US, and North Europe in particular where either th few dealers they have don't keep much choice, or there's no stores for hundreds of miles. From what I've been told, the UK has more hi-fi stores than Australia! I find it hard to believe there's very little 2 channel in the US, but then I suppose a lot of them spend most of their time in front of the TV eating bags of 'chips' the size of bags of fertiliser. Well, that's what TV has led me to believe anyway.

All that costs money, and the majority of people just won't pay much when it comes to luxury items. People with 2 Mercs and a BMW in the drive in front of their £700,000 house just don't buy expensive hi-fi/AV, they generally want as cheap as possible. It's the poor and middle classes that buy expensive AV, but I doubt they're going to buy a house with another £10k slapped on top of it because you can't see the speakers and subs. Plus, they like to show what they've paid for

Why is that surprising? The UK population is about three times bigger.
