Hi. I am just getting back into hi fi and have resurrected my 20 year old system. I am happy with the front end - Michelle Orbe turntable and Orelle XTC CD Transport and DAC and with the ATC SCM10 small stand mounted speakers. However, I am considering upgrading the amplifiers (mid 90s Audiolab 8000C and P pre and power amps). From internet reviews I have shortlisted 3 which look good quality to me - the Chord CPM2650 integrated, the Bryston B135SST2 integrated and the ATC CA2/P1 pre/power combination. The music I play is mainstream rock/pop/folk - Springsteen, Beatles, Stones, Chuck Prophet, Dido, Steve Forbert, Natalie Merchant, Graham Parker, Mark Knopfler etc - no heavy metal or classical. I don't play at over loud volumes and do a lot of evening headphone listening out of respect for the neighbours (AKG 812 headphones). I would like to ask could anyone give me a brief description of the characteristics of any or all of these amps eg bright or dark sounding, forward or laid back, dynamic or smooth etc? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thankyou.
