This is one amazing amp guys! Haven't had time to follow all the MCACC setup instructions from v1c yet, but.....have run the auto setup and it sounds wonderful! Watching Aliens in The Attic on Sky HD right now with the kids and they keep turning round to see whats going on behind with all the rear fx!

It's a massive step up from the Onkyo 806, the sound is steered around all the speakers much more effectively so that you really feel like you're in the middle of what you're watching and that's just with 5.1 DD!

The Onkyo is 'loud' and a little brash compared to the Pioneer which is much more refined with much better control over all the speakers.

Gonna watch a couple of Disney BD's tomorrow (Up and Toy Story) and see if I can crank it up a little!

Pleased your happy mate

After having a little play with it now, for the benefit of others on this forum that have been led to believe that Pioneer is bright or harsh, how are you finding it with your 'slightly on the bright side' speakers grdunn123? Always good to get a genuine user's view on it as being a retailer, I'm not always believed....

It's a massive step up for me sonically and financially! I can't quite believe I've shelled out so much (albeit half price on what it was originally new!). I'll be on here every other day asking for more and more hints and tips....

David, having had the Onkyo for 2 years which I now realise majored on bass and volume, I can say that the Pioneer is not bright or harch in the treble at all. I'm going to experiment with it over the coming week(s) and explore all the available tweaks but 'out of the box' t sounds very refined but also ready to rock at the drop of a hat!

Just out of interest, I've noticed a little graphic on the display which says 'up mix'.....should this be enabled or not?? ( see, I told you i'd keep asking)

David,

I can verify that the Pioneers (my LX72) are far from bright as I too have some Monitor Audio speakers (Apex), the sound is really comfortable to listen to.

I bought it on line mainly down to the reviews, don't have many dealers near me so couldn't demo. I am familiar with the Pioneer 'sound' though having owned their Precision amp and cd player some 13 years ago!

Just reran the MCACC full auto set up and it keeps saying that my surround left may be connected out of phase but I've checked and rechecked and it seems to be connected correctly.....why would it be telling me this ??

I get this as well, not sure why.

I just pressed ignore, but not sure if that was right either, it never did it on the first test

Amps sometimes do this if you have your surround speakers set as di-pole rather than bi-pole, which I assume you can with your RXFX's if they're anything like my RSFX's. Di-pole speakers run one tweeter out of phase and amps sometimes pick this up as the whole speaker being connected out of phase.

You can either press ignore (though I'm not sure how this effects the final room eq result, of flick the switch on the back of the speaker to change it to bi-pole, re-run the MCACC, and then switch it back one your finished.

Info on Di + Bi
Dipole speakers

By definition, dipole speakers radiate sound in two, usually opposite,
directions with the sound travelling in one direction being out of phase
with the other. When one cone moves outward, it compresses the air
molecules, while the other cone moves inward, resulting in a rarefaction
or expansion of air molecules. These opposing bass waves cancel at the
sides of the speaker, producing a "null" in the listening area to the
sides, whereas the midrange and treble sounds fire forward and to the
rear. Bipole speakers

Some surround sound experts claim that dipoles simply sound out of
phase, and to eliminate this effect, they prefer multidirectional bipole
surround speakers. In bipole speakers, the front and rear bass waves
are in phase, and fire both forward and to the rear. They create a
similar (but not identical) wash of atmospheric sounds without bass
cancellation or null area like that produced by a dipole. Because this
difference can be very fine, some manufacturers offer speakers with a
switch to allow the user to choose between dipole or bipole effects. The Amps got it right then.

Just a note regarding the set up earlier in this thread. For Michael's system, it's simple, as all the speakers can be set to small, as that's how they're designed to work. I noticed a few people using their MA RX6 packages with everything set to large. There's nothing too wrong with this as people who play their systems at average volumes wont come across any issues, but those who like louder volumes need to do a little tweaking.

The centre speaker in the majority of speaker systems should be set to small. This is because the drivers they use are usually small than that of the front left/right speakers, and there's less cabinet volume too. This means that the bass response will be different. The only time the centre should be set to large is if the centre speaker is roughly the same as far as cabinet volume and driver size are concerned. If the centre is smaller, you may be asking it to do too much if it's set to large like the bigger front speakers..

There is also the choice of setting everything to small. This brings the frequency range which all the speakers have to deal with down to the same level, so you're getting the same frequency range from all speakers, regardless of their size. This helps them to sound far more 'similar', giving a more convincing soundstage - you just have to make sure your sub is set correctly.

Yeah ive had the lx70 now for a while & the MCACC is what this machine is all about.Whatever sound you're trying to achieve, there are so many (fairly simple) settings you can adjust after MCACC has run if you think it might need a tweak hear or there.Once you have a good neutral set of speakers you will get exact sound you're aiming for with MCACC,I reckon its the most accurate of all and ive had Sony,H/K,Yamaha & onkyo over the last 10 yrs or so with the pio really leaving a great impression compared to the others especially musicality.
