I may get one of these to replace my Chameleon. Thoughts?

I now have a bassy CDP, bassy speakers and a bassy IC. Although lovely, I could probably tweak the sound in a positive way by going for a less bassy cable.

I wonder if Nordost interconnects generally tame bass. I didn't have a lot of time for the blue heavens in my quad set up but they do a good job of balancing out my super bassy 2.1 acoustic energy bedroom set up.

i do have a thought joel, regardless of finanicial situation etc - you do want you want with what you have earnt mate and so will i....... but what does your missus say when you tell her you are spending the equivilent of a nice weekend away on a piece of cable ? coz i'd gat a frying pan round my head if i asked !! i told her i wanted a dac the other day. she said " what does it do, whats it for ?" i told her she didnt understand tutted and walked off shaking her head! like i said its not a monetry thing - i suspect she would say the same if we were millionaires tbh.

its not a non believing cable question either - i doubled up on my rumour 2 today the results are astounding ( she also moaned on the £40 that cost )

just wondering if peoples missus or friends etc reacted like mine do - ITS A BIT OF CABLE GET A LIFE !! etc

anyway joel hope it makes the improvements you strive for in your nice system

She'll never know mate.

Mind you I'm sitting here now listening to Jack Johnson, a very well produced CD, and it's definitely worth the little upgrades here and there. I'm not short of cash, but nor am I loaded, but I get good value. I never buy new unless I have to, so everything gets recycled for just about the same money. I'm simply investing...

Darling, you you mind if I spend £200+ on a new cable? My love...have some flowers...you are beautiful...would you like a massage? etc etc

Im definately not wanting to start another argument on cables but could someone, Joel seems to be the one to ask about cables?,tell me how much are you willing to spend on cables in relation to the price of your components? Does that make sense? Hope so. For example Joel is talking about £200+ on a cable. Would you use this with your Arcam A85?

Chord Carnival Silver plus + Merlin Chopin interconnects. Adds transparency even to my megre set-up. There is another alternative: stand mount speakers. These will give you a faster, tauter bass and will eliminate any 'Boom.' Sorry if it's too extreme, but they'll cure the hefty bass you're experiencing.

The Arcs are next in line to be upgraded. Yes it does make sense. My Nordost mains made one hell of a difference. Much better. My Chameleon did too, not sure whether better but different to my vdh D102 III nonetheless.

The Nordost mains is why I'm so keen to get a decent Nordost IC.

The CDP is £2,500 RRP, speakers £2,000, amps £1,650, so it's not overkill on the 10% basis that's suggested.

maybe the mag should do a section of popular threads. this one would be a good start. maybe with the headline ' JOELS WIFE SHOULD READ THIS '

lol, I'm talking tweaking 5% PP rather than a revamp. I love what I have.

Luckily she'd rather french kiss a bulldog than read the mag

When you put it like that it certainly isnt. Sorry i wasnt aware that the Arcams rrp was so high. Ive only seen them on ebay and they seem to go for reasonable money. You had any experience of ur amps with ATC SCM40s? Im using Arcan 8R and 8P amps with them and theyre definately underpowered. Meant to be getting some better suited amplification but have just joined the great unemployed so any major expinditure is out of the question. I use the D102 mkIII aswell! It will prob stay with me till it breaks and I cant see that happening. Sorry for hijacking your thread BTW!!

The A85 was £900 RRP, and the P85 was £750, I biamp. But will get a nice high end integrated next time. And then possibly biamp that in due course.

I had an Arcam 7 before and these are much nicer in every way, but they can obviously be betttered I would imagine. Megabucks though. Don't get me wrong the vdh is a nice cable and I still use it on my DVD, vety different to the Chord though.

Not heard the ATCs but have heard very good reports, not heard a bad one from anyone.

Go 2nd hand and it's difficult to go wrong really.

plastic penguin:Do you have an 'end game'? Once you've replaced the A85, will you be content for the next few years? or do you you anticipate upgrade bug strike again within a few months?

I anticipate it will strike again. Shamefully. At least it's not going into Paddy Power's pockets.

Joel, I use Nordost cables throughout my system. People say they have less bass and it is true that dont have that full sound and compared to other cables, and can sound quite lean compared to them.

But in my opinion, this is only because the sound is less bloated and is more defined. Nordost cables sound exceptionally clean and are very good at rhythm and making changes to notes far easier to discern.

Prepaps with equipment that is already on the lean side they are not the best bet, but with acram equipment I think they will be well suited.

how are your speakers coupled to the floor joel? it might be worth trying some granite or something under them to reduce bass going into the floor. interconnects are something i've never really tested, i got a good deal on my current cables when i bought my old system and there wasn't a lot else to consider at the time. once the next raft of upgrades are out the way, i'll definitely have to give some a go.

Just what I thought, valve CDP, Arcam amps and bassy speakers would probably benefit from a slightly leaner IC than the Chameleon.

I'm talking semantics Craig really, it's a lovely sound. I just wonder whether the bass is just ever so slightly too prominent. I've just put the vdh's back on and I think it's more balanced. Mind you only one track in so will give them a good listen.

Now 4 tracks in and it's a different sound. Cleaner.

Whereas when I had my Dali's and CD192 which were both quite lean, the Chameleon enhanced the bass, I now have the Unico and Kudos which don't need enhancement. And the vdh is better suited.
