Ok so my girlfriends dad is really into audio/visual and i'm getting a bit of the bug.

Saturday this week i reset and properly calibrated my Sony DAV-DZ230* using the microphone and it made a huge difference to how the audio was produced. Bass was less heavy and now subtle how it should be, and i can hear the dolby music go around the room as it should. After this I put on Transformers on my 40" Samsung LCD** and notice the picture seemed 'normal' like watching standard channels. I thought being an upscaling DVD player it would be much sharper, but reading a copy of WH magazine it says that the HDMI lead can help with this. The Lead i'm using at the moment is a simple lead from ASDA. Now I've found this*** on eBay and was wondering if it was any good it seems 10x better.

What resolution have u go the dvd output set to?

Press 'Function' repeatedly to get to 'dvd'.

Press 'Video Format' to cycle between 720x576p, 1280x720p, 720x576p, 1920x1080i.

Does this make a difference?

I believe HDMI leads can make several 'step' improvements to picture and sound, but you're kit sounds short of a 'jump'.

A Thatcable at £5 is a pretty good place to start. But it really sounds like a setting or picture calibration issue as above.

Well to tell you where I'm at with TV and DVD. The TV has literally been placed on wall HDD, Aerial and DVD plugged in and that is it.

The DVD I reset the other night and used the auto calibration using tripod and microphone. But as you guess that only does the sound which is spot on. I shall go in the loft in a bit and get the TV manual and have a play with aspects.
