I've upgraded my speakers from Mordaunt short 902s to Monitor audio RS6, the thing is after 200hrs or more listening time the RS6 the sound hasn't improved that much- compared to the 902s there is not a lot of difference in sound quality apart from a lot more bass. The room I listen to music in is a far size and can handle floor standers-I've moved the speakers all round the room and toed in. Or have I got weak link in my system.

Nad C545bee - Yaqin MC-10L/50wpc- Chord Crimsom interconnect- Nordost flat line gold- MRS6

any help would be appreciated

both are kind of bright speakers.the 902 some treble brightness the rs6 mid range brightness..of course more bass on these.maybe you need warm speakers.

The problem is a bit of a sideways 'upgrade'. To really hear a good benefit, you have to spend twice as much. My next upgrade will cost me a fortune, but otherwise it's not worth it.

If you can try and reposition the RS6's. The MS's are a budget speaker and are not fussy where they are placed. By contrast, the RS6's is a hefty step-up and will let the listener know if they're not placed correctly. This could account for the heavy bass.

Do you still have the Mordaunt Short's?

I'd be tempted to buy/try a different brand/grade of speaker cable, and if you still have the older speakers, switch between the two as well. You might find different speakers have different cable preference, and you can squeeze a bit more out without a lot more effort (just a bit of extra listening ;-) ).

If your amp has two switchable speaker outputs try wiring one cable via output 1, and the other via output 2, and switch between the two. I tried this a while ago, when I'd bought some Atlas Basic for the Tannoy Mercury 1's in the HC setup, so I could have my QED SA back in my bedroom setup. The difference was amazing, but it was all the more obvious because it was only a button press between the two. I'll certainly experiment with speaker cable this way in future.

(In case anybody's bothered, the Atlas Basic ended up in the bedroom - it's lighter bass tamed the occasionally rowdy rear-firing ports, and I got to keep the full range required in the HC).

Remember when following Strobo's suggestion the more sensitive speakers will be louder and subjectively more impressive.

Is there any mileage to be had in tube rolling as well as the cabling suggestion?

What sort of change were you looking for?

I've a pair of MS906 which have drive units in common with the 902 but have no experience of the MA RS range.

From what I've read about the RS2 and also on the thread below re the RS6 they do need a fair bit of power and a smooth source/amp. I'm not sure how the Yaqin measures up there but they do look interesting.
