but did I mention it's very big?
Big is GOOD! (Big and hot is better) >)
Mine weighs over 28 kg (for 35W !) and you could cook on it!
OK, managed to get a bit of an extended listen today. Bunch of MP3s at 320 from iMac playing through iTunes (nothing extra like bitperfect etc) via optical out into Beresford Bushmaster to the A1001 powering the Monopulse via some unknown old cables I've had for yonks. Also tried CDs on Marantz 63 MkII KI Sig with and without the DAC, with cruddy old interconnect I've had for ages. All on the ground floor - a solid concrete floor - in a pretty massive room, I would say it's a good 8m by 10m (it's gonna be a kitchen/diner/party room once finished), with no plaster on walls, very high sloping ceiling in places, no furnishings whatsoever (it's an unfinished extension, I've got a lot of work to do!!!). Speakers a good 6m apart.
Crikey, that was a mouthful.
Anyways, VERY pleasing results - the amp takes some warming up, would say it didn't really hit its stride until about an hour in, at quite high volume. It didn't get too hot to start, but was heating up nicely all the way until I had to leave about 3 hours later. At which point it was really quite warm.
First things first, the Monopulse can go extremely loud. The A1001 can take them way up, without any distortion, beyond where either of my (admittedly much cheaper) amps could take them. I think "grip" is probably the word. I listened to mostly electronica such as Ellen Allien, Deadmau5 but also some stuff like Cat Power and Calexico - whatever I had available without much forethought.
MP3s via the Beresford sounded fantastic. CDP without Beresford sounded fantastic. But CDP with Beresford was utterly awesome. Just seemed to open everything up - vocals floating around, punchier bass, tight and stomach-whacking. Massive soundstage, everything great really. Disco like volume.
Listening position was anything from 2m in front of the speakers to about 7m back - optimal position was probably about 4m to 5m out.
Erm, not sure what's not to like. Just hope it doesn't change too much as I plaster/tile/put a kitchen in/add furnishings.
Yeah, like that's gonna make any difference!
Anyhows, very very happy right now - exactly the kind of noise I've been hoping/aiming for. And there will be improvements to be made no doubt - lossless files, speaker placement etc.
On the downside, the amp is so sodding huge and heavy that it's a total pain to lug around from one place to another. In fact the whole thing was a total ballache to set up - it needed extension leads and moving computers around etc on top of the weight of the amp. And have now had to pack everything back up and put away so builders don't destroy it all with dust and/or stupidity.
Darn.
