Yeah, you can - had my eye on this but haven't managed to read anything very positive about it online.

Got any idea how this compares to the A5?

I'm getting increasingly drawn to the current great deals on the HK HK990 too.

Having said that, I just read a description as follows:

Awesome power and seismic bass. A very good all-rounder with super-clean sound.

Which sounds nice...

Sorry, I haven't read that much about it - what I have is mostly good.

I'm just going on the fact that it is heavily biassed in Class A and doubles its power into 4 Ohms (ie. 400W). :bounce:

You've probably seen this: http://www.audioreview.com/cat/amplification/integrated-amplifiers/musical-fidelity/a1001/prd_115983_2717crx.aspx

Nope, hadn't seen that, but had read the second review from that page somewhere else.

You would imagine it's got to be some piece of kit though - it was £2.5k in 1998!

That was my thought.

I'd like to see you with an amp that does your speakers justice.

Thanks fella! Me too by the way - it's gonna happen, I'm just not rushing into anything...

Had kind of decided on an MF A5 but this one does look interesting.

What are your thoughts on the HK HK990 by the way? I've only heard one once, I just kind of like everything I read about it.

IMO. It's hard to beat for the money, but probably not as good as the MF.

I don't mean to go all Greenpeace on you, but is this sort of Class A amp the kind of thing that makes the lights dim when you turn it on?

Does it eat a lot more power than other amps? Like in a noticeable way?

Save the planet, money doesn't grow on trees etc. etc. etc.

Hi OB, here is my understanding.

A full Class A amp uses at least half of its available power to produce heat (35W amp will reach 35 deg C) and is drawing (nearly) max Watts from the mains, even when not playing.

In an AB amp, the more it is biassed in Class A, the hotter it will get, the more power it will use (even in idle).....and (imo) the better it is likely to sound. They can often double their output as impedance halves (the HK does), which means lots of current from a very robust transformer.

The HK has a high standing current which causes the first few Watts to be delivered in Class A, and this in turn means it draws 180W from the plug at idle (1000W flat out). I would expect this amp to get quite hot at the heat sinks when pushed.

The MF is also highly biassed in Class A (probably more so), gets pretty hot and can also double it's power as impedance halves......It too draws 1000W when flat out.

So you can see, these are not the greenest amps, but shouldn't cost too much to run a year, provided they aren't left on 24/7. I reckon my amp (MF AMS 35i) would cost £140 per year, if played 6 hrs/day (for 365 days).

If you are worrying about your Carbon Footprint, the best Class D amps I've actually heard are from Bel Canto; I've also read good things about the new digital amps from Nad....and Primare are worth a mention as well.

Hope this helps

Cno

Thanks, great reply!

Allan from Monopulse recommended something Class A that kicks out 20 watts or more.

How do you rate the Musical Fidelity A5 - seems like you can generally pick them up for about £750 ish.

Keeping my eyes on the A1001.

As yet undecided!

EXTREMELY tempted by the HK990 as if it's not good enough for the Monopulse it will slot quite nicely into a set up elsewhere in the house. No need for DAC or phono stage, it looks like a great bit of kit.

As stated previously, I have heard one - but powering a set of the Q Acoustics 2050i. Sounded awesome, and I think it would have enough power for the Monopulse.

Still keeping an eye on the A1001 though!

The HK 990 has enough current to power a welder.....so no worries on that score.

I haven't heard the A5, which I believe sounds somewhat similar, but not as good as the M6.

Did you keep more than your eyes on the A1001?

Yup! Expecting it in the next couple of days, will let you know results...

:silenced:

I won't anticipate the outcome, in case I've led you up the garden path (resisting the urge to :bounce: )

My Class A power amp (KT88 and 2x15wpc) will draw around 150W all the time, wether at idle or high volume.

If I have the lights on in the room (3x60W bulbs iirc) that uses more.

I use a candle, LED light and have the music on. Carbon Neutral

BTW, see how much energy your electric cooker, or shower uses, probably around 6-8KW! Kettles even more!

Wasn't expecting to win it at all - put my max bid in with about 2 mins to go, expecting loads of bidding over last few mins - but lo and behold, nothing!

Wonder how revealing it's going to be source-wise. Right now for testing purposes I'll be plugging in my Marantz 63 MkII KI Sig. Bog standard interconnect and cables. It's going to sound great though!

In terms of the garden path I figure this amp is imminently resellable, so no probs there.

I'd had loads of advice to go either Class A or valve.

I would expect it to do justice to a good source but still make the most of a poorer one....time will tell.

Once it has settled in to your system, you can look at cables etc, or even a better source.

I await your review with interest, tinged with trepidation.

Picked it up yesterday, gonna set it all up tomorrow or sunday - will let you know!

What I can tell you is that it is absolutely enormous. 30kg apparently. I was a bit shocked by the sheer heft of it.

Very interested as to how it's going to sound, the reviews I've managed to find on it are very polarised, people seem to love or utterly hate it.

Anyway, will keep you informed!
