I've been wondering about this for a while, and you all know i can't help but verbalise every thought (tho it isnt verbalising when you write it, is it?), so here goes.

i find the sound when i listen to bands on myspace obviously superior to whn i listen to my own collection - even albums that have gone straight from CD to FLAC files.

Anyone have any theories on why, as ive come up with nuttin!?

There is either something very wrong, or you've simply grown accustomed to the highly compressed dynamic range of 128 and less kbps offerings that exist on Myspace.

Cannot for the life of me think of the top of my head what could be causing it if there is a problem. I'll have a think.

al7478:oh. ok. cheers.

...skulks off to make appointment with ENT specialist...

Ok. Do some tests...

1. Use winamp, or foobar for the testing
2. Play a CD from the CD rom drive
3. Rip that cd and play in software
How do they compare?
How does the CD playback compare to Myspace?
Any more info you can think of..
If the ripped copy is in any way inferior to the CD played version you have a ripping problem.

Try that and come back... :)

OK, but i should also compare to myspace shouldnt i?

Must admit i havent been comparing like for like exactly, as i dont have a song in flac yet that i can definitely find on a bands myspace site. I'll get back to you tho.

Did you, perchance, get my message re: Vista as opposed to XP with regard to K-Mixer...?

What do you use to rip? If EAC, it places a log file in the folder containing the ripped tracks. Take a look inside the log file and see if there is anything "funny" listed.

I agree with fr0g. Need to compare cd playback with a ripped track. If these sound the same.....then I'm stuck. If they are clearly different, with the ripped track sounding worse, then there are a numbers of ways forward.

Shouldn't worry too much about comparing the flac files to myspace music just yet. Do as fr0g suggested first and report back.

Cheers, ill do that, but im about to embark on a mammoth buying and ripping session, so it may take a while.

Also tho, before i do that, i have to check that i have eac correctly configured, as ive had one or two issues there (different ones tho), so obviously thatll help with the checking of the CD/FLACs.

Can I just say Al, don't go on a mammoth 'ripping' session, until this is sorted ;)

theres always another spanner in the works tho isnt there...?

lol sorry, im just keen to get on as ive left myself quite a lot to do, making up for past mistakes. you live and learn.

but yes, good idea. ive ripped Accelerate to FLAC, so ill do a comparison with the cd and report back. i would then compare it to a track from that album on their myspace page, but they covered up the song player with a video, the cheeky wee scamps.

Sorry to hear bout the bike, guv.

1st point...nope...Once its working its GREAT!!!
2nd... Nowt to do with you, but Vista is poo(for audio). I am now using Ubuntu as a 2nd boot, as the sound is so much better! So I am now using Firefox!
3rd...Where are you based? Might have to come and listen at some point, as this one is driving me crazy..!

(although it would be next time I was in the UK!)
Bike... hmph ta, getting over it, but I loved that bike. It needed work doing (New chain, gears, brakes, tyres and front wheel.) Just glad I hadn't got around to it now!

al7478:This is bizzare. the FLACs sound better. Crappy DVD and CD drives (i tried it in both)?

No thats good. The FLAC should sound AT LEAST as good as the drive you rip it from...using EAC / secure mode

Copy and paste the top chunk of the .log file here, or on the other place...

Glad fr0g go to you before you started your mammoth ripping session. I noticed your comments last night on my PS3 downstairs (I can't login to whfsv from downstairs - I don't know my password!) and I don't use the PC after my wife goes to bed.

Every time you rip a cd using EAC it automatically creates a log file for that album. All it is is a text file into which it squirts the results of the rip eg accuracy, errors, etc.

Find the last tracks you ripped. One of the files will be named <something or other>.log - that's the log file of which fr0g speaks. You can open the file simply by double clicking it - it should open in notepad.

Thanks PJ. I ran thru the EAC setup properly (far as i can tell) and sent the log of a rip of the new REM album to fr0g. I also did the experiment fr0g reccommended and indeed the flac did sound better than from either my CD or DVD drives. Have'nt tried with Myspace yet.

EDIT - and ive no "proper" "disk spinner" to compare, but the flacs sounded good to me. but then i knew they would already.
