Hi Andrew
I know you have talked about the DVD5 a little elsewhere (if you could call it a discussion!) and apologies for the public post (you can't seem to pm anyone on these forums?), but I know that you personally have the Naim and I just wondered about your thoughts on some aspects, well, one in particular:
As I've mentioned elsewhere, I'm starting to consider moving away from my current set up, and I have my fingers, and toes, tapping towards a Naim outfit, then slowly changing and upgrading within that fold. It is audio performance that I want to make my main priority, with AV coming a close 2nd.
I'm sold enough on the AV2, and some of the more junior amps, to make my start, but it's the DVD5 that slightly bothers me. Obviously, its the scaler issue that is the, er, issue. I guess it's just not coming, is it ?! (Do you know any more?). Would you say this is reason enough to have doubts over the DVD5 as a decent investment, vision wise ? I haven't seen one play yet, but I'm sure it's up there with the best for SD DVD, but is the lack of 720p or 1080p a big issue, especially if it's that much ahead in the first place ? I have a 32" Sony HD Ready set at present, so obviously the scaling the LCD would have to do is less than for a HD screen, but ultimately I would want to be able to get a slightly larger and better panel at 1080p down the line, and would expect an investment like the DV5 to stay with me for some time, at least until BluRay - I'm sure Naim in AV, like Leica in cameras, will be fairly slow and over priced in coming to the market !
So, are you happy enough with the TV doing the scaling for you, at this level...? And would I therefore have to be careful with TV choice and it's quality of scaler? Would you say the little I loose (if I do) visually, I will more than gain sonically, along with benefits of the rest of the Naim set up for other audio duties....?
Potentially, the DVD5 would also serve my CD needs until something like a HDX was feasible for me, as long as it's up to at least a 5i quality, and they can be picked up ex-demo and sale for ok prices, so I'm tempted...! Just worried a little on the video output......
Appreciate your thoughts. SC
