No disrespect to Electronic music, I've even got a few CD's, Faithless, Moby and MGVC in my collection, but for me it's real instruments and lyrics that stir my emotions... the admiration for the musician, the mastery they have over guitars, mandolins, flutes, banjo, fiddle, cello andviolin, as well as other more obscure instruments never ceases to amaze me. Not to mention their talents with the pen, creating storytelling and poetry, whether it be observations on life or nature, relationships or the land in which we live, and those who recreate Folk tales, songs that have been around for many years, performing them in their own style, that's the music I love.

Now, with that in mind, who can name some artists in this vane that you particularly like and recommend albums by them:

The ones I'm really into at the moment ar Phillip Henry and Hannah Martin and their new album called Edgelarks... remember it doesn't have to be just Folk.

Hi macspur,

Nick Drake - five leaves left, is a fantastic folk album. Seriously good acoustic arrangements and melodies , sardonic melancholy vocal. It’s just hugely musical. One of those albums that most people who really like music, like.

how about too, Trees - the garden of Jane dealwney. A very hippey folky acoustic album. I suppose more folk rock, but still very good.

cheers simon.

Some of these Ecm albums on tidal are quite good. I’ve been checking them out. A whole section designated to them on the tidal app.

Never heard of her but the albums is excellent. Very good, indeed. Also tried a couple of tracks from the new album you mentioned in another thread but it pales in comparison. Enchanting stuff!

It's like folky Tool :) Would love her to do a duet with Maynard James Keenan!

One of the best acoustic albums of the year for me is Big Thief’s capacity album. Listen to the track called Mary Macspur, it’s a very nice acoustic album, in the indie rock genre, but the melodies and song writing is to die for.

If you want a good one in the modern folk genre from this year, which my record shop recommended to me this weekend ; Julie Byrne - not even happiness. They have it up there as their best album of the year.

It’s very ethereal, well written. Just started listening to it. It’s taking some time to get some of the melodies, but they said persist and you are rewarded. It’s relaxing and settling to say the least.

I did tip Gula Gula a few days ago on another post about testing systems.

Yes good to see ECM more available, I would choose:

Anouar Brahem: The Astounding Eyes of Rita.

Switching to Americana how about Gillian Welch: The Harrow & the Harvest.

Celtic: Solas: The Words that Remain

Susan McKeown: Lowlands (Dark Horse on the wind is scary)

Flook: Rubai, probably one of the most unusual bands (frontline of three flutes and whistles)

Country/bluegrass: Sarah Jarosz: Build me up from the Bones

Country: Lyle Lovett: Joshua Judges Ruth

Just a few for starters.

I don't know how many of these you already know but i'd recommend:

Christy Moore - King Puck and Folk Tale you want to hear stories then you've "Lawless" and "Morcombe Bay"

Buffy Ste Marie - Cocincedence and Likely Stories- The whole album is a story of deciet and betrayal the first song tells the whole story

Indigo Girls - Rites of passage - kick ass folk rock world music

Joan Beaz - Vol2 - trad folk songs and her singing wil break your heart

Natalie Merchant-Tigerlilly- I think this is her first solo album her voice is haunting

Yes, right up my street, I've had that in my Amazon wish list for a while, but there's always been something else to buy.

Yes, all of Cara Dillon’s albums are wonderful recordings - the latest, ‘Wanderer’ is no exception. Another artist to try, one of our greatest songwriters, Chris Wood. On a side issue, but also relevant, I heard Chris at a small venue a couple of weeks back, where the sound quality was breathtaking and better than you’d achieve with even the most expensive home set-up. You do sometimes find that with folk and jazz.
