One new album has had a very weak start with me today - the new Sharleen Spiteri.

Poor arrangements and production, poor engineering, and surprisingly un-inspiring performances.

A strong finish isn't looking very likely.

ESP2009:

This kind of music has previously left me cold but this album has seduced me (it gets put on by the other half every time we have visitors round). Played above wallpaper music levels, this album is gorgeous.

I enjoyed this album straight away and bought it the following day after hearing it on spotify ....

the same was with Amy Macdonald and Madeleine Peyroux ... enjoyed them from the 1st listen and ended up buying them a few days after hearing

One that sticks out for me is this:

Found it very harsh and a bit frenzied when I first heard it. Not my normal taste. But persevered with it and found it brilliant in the end.

Just fired Amy Madonald up on Spotify and I am enjoying the album straight off. Madeleine may take more listens to decide.

Isn't Spotify just brilliant?! Gone are the days of listening to poor quality 30 second clips from Amazon.

has been expensive for me as I listen on spotify then end up buying the cd aswell .... I currently have a list of 'must haves' as long as my arm

it's got so bad now, that I buy a few cd's every few days, don't tell my wife (to keep the peace), and just add them to the cd shelf when she is not around ....

Oooooooh, that's dodgy - back to the 'Little White Lies' thread and we don't want to venture there, do we?

Yes...I made the mistake of telling my better half my moniker on this forum. She now knows that I have an Amazon wishlist, that I am expecting at least 2 new CDs any day now through the post, that I will soon be angling for new speakers, that I am not sure that £60 for Chord Cobra 3 was money entirely well-spent (ouch), that I have been wasting time on ebay, that I expect diminishing returns from future hi-fi purchases (if only...), and that I am not currently working but rather indulging in this entertaining forum whilst she looks after the kids. My life is over.

All we ask for is a series of blank cheques, a couple of grands' worth of boxes and plenty time to enjoy them at anti-social volumes. Is that too much to request? Well apparently, yes!

We're just misunderstood, that's all.

How do you hide the fact that you have purchased a beastie like a Musical Fidelity A5 ?!? What can you dress it up as? How do you disguise it?

Lady GaGA "The Fame".

Bought it just for "Poker Face" (haven't we all bought an album on the strength of just one single? I know no better, even at 51!) Anyway, played it, hated it, and totally forgot about it for at least 3 months. Found it again and didn't notice any real improvement, but now? LOVE IT!! Now it's a regular "must" listen at least 2-3 times a week.

Interesting. You should have posted for advice. I'm a master attitude adjuster. You need to start way bigger. Tell her you want to take out a second mortgage because your deeply depressed and only fullfilling your lifelong dream of owning a hgh end hifi will turn things round. If you can break down and cry it would help alot.

Should get you an A5 no problem. New speakers too if you want...

No ... my wife is different ... I have made mention of what I want and I just leave things as they are and not mention a word about it again ...

she pulls the purse strings and will eventually make a plan (when she thinks the time is right)...

Beirut - The Flying Club Cup. I heard this before Gulag Orkestar and just didn't get it on the first listen, but have since listened to it hundreds of times. Just amazing. 'In the Mausoleum' is one of my favourite songs to show off what my Eclipses can do.

Oooh! Just remembered! The first time i heard Pink Floyed The Wall i hated it! Eventually ended up in my top ten albums ever! By the way Simon how you getting on with your Eclipses? Did you hear them with a range of amplifiers? If so can you comment? Sorry divert from op sure other people will continue on the normal path!

Eerrr Beyonce. I've said it. Keep getting more and more into Ravi Shankar (Nora Jones dad pos best sitar player her half sister is a good player of it also).

I love them! Perfect match for my well-sorted Techie - the resolution and timing are just exquisite. I tried them out with loads of solid-state amp combinations, but they always sounded too clinical and even a bit brittle. The VS55 just gave them a bit more body and warmth.

Anyway, sorry for going off-topic, everyone.

I find it hard to imagine never liking this album, but when Marillion came out with Brave, their 3rd album with Steve Hogarth, I just couldn't get to grips with it, it was quite a departure from anything they'd previously recorded. Now, however, I'm pretty sure it's my favorite album and hardly a week goes by when I don't find some time to listen to it.

Glad you are enjoying them! Im looking into changing to a valve amp my self! So will see how that goes.

igglebert:As Matthew points out, This is the Life is a very good album and def the one to start with.

Thanks for that recommendation! I've been absolutely loving this Amy MacDonald CD since it arrived. Still can't pull the trigger on Madeleine though...

I wonder how many of you will listen to the albums you cite now in 5 years time? I'm beginning to think only classical music, jazz and Latin American are the only stayers.

I recently had to choose what music to put on my ipodand take with me for an unlimited sojourn O/S and picked stuff similar to some of the records you mention. Already sick of most of it, and am bitterly regretting not having taken more classical. The first thing I'm going to delete when I'm back in hifiland will be Melua followed by a ritual burning of the CD..

James - good choice. Have you heard 'Superabudnace', which I think tops 'The Voices of Animals and Men'? You can add Witty to its description. great album

Nick
