This topic might not connect with anyone, but I'll give it a try. In my opinion, the best music, the masterpieces, the stuff with legs, is usually (not always of course) music that requires many listens to appreciate. It's like your love affair with the piece slowly builds. I've had CDs that I've considered throwing out in disgust that later became favorites. I don't think I'm alone on this. Something about how the brain processes music. The more familiar you are with a piece, the more pleasure you derive from it. But oddly this is not always true. There's been cases where I want to like something and listen to it over and over again and no appreciation develops.

So any of you want to share a CD that you didn't love on first listen, but later became a fav? Here's my latest. I absolutely love Corrine Bailey Rae's new CD and I was totally luke warm at best on first listen...

Harry Chapin - Greatest Stories Live definitely falls into this category. Terrifically witty, warm live album which I can highly recommend but on which I was lukewarm at first.

PS. Have added Corinne Bailey Rae to the old Amazon wishlist - thanks Jaxwired !

This kind of music has previously left me cold but this album has seduced me (it gets put on by the other half every time we have visitors round). Played above wallpaper music levels, this album is gorgeous.

Jaxwired, you are so spot on here! I wrote about this album a while back - I loved it because of her voice but after a few listens it got better and better. My girlfriend wasn't a fan at first and then I spoke with her about it a couple of weeks later and she rates it one of her all time faves now! Stunning album which will win loads of awards.

Hi athenry. Yeah, the Amazon wishlist is great. I use it all the time, although not really for it's true purpose. I'm lucky that I can afford to buy music when I want (sure wasn't always that way), but, I use the wishlist for the "maybe" category of music. I'll be music hunting on Amazon and I come across stuff that I think I might want, but I'm not positive. I stick it in my wishlist. Then I can come back to it another day and see if I still like it. This technique works great for me. It's saved me from making some mistakes.

Another tip, music hunting on Amazon should really be done sober. Otherwise, you end up with music that leaves you saying "what the @$#%!" It's happened to me more than once.

Gerrardasnails:Stunning album which will win loads of awards.

Hey Gerrardasnails, yes, quite a departure from her first CD. Don't know if you're aware, but her husband died of a drug overdose between the two releases... You can definately see the influence. This new music is darker and more complex.

I did know that - I've been a fan for a while. Although her first album is much more commercial pop, I soon realised she was a talent and she's worked with some massive stars inbetween albums. Did you know that she wrote 90% of The Sea, before he died?! It sounds like a love story to him and all the more poignant because of what happened.

"Hospice" by "The Antlers". Initially thought it was ok. Now think its a stunning album that connects like few others. Be warned though its not an easy listen nor is it very cheery infact its downright depressing! Prob the best album ive heard in ages.

Hi Igglebert,

It's funny, I've considered Madeleine Peyroux and Amy MacDonald music many times but have never pulled the trigger on either. Their music is right in my sweet spot, but I've never connected enough with the 30 second clips on amazon to buy their music. I guess I need to do it. If I buy one CD from each, which ones should I start with?

jaxwired:drummerman: AntonyandtheJohnsons - I am a Bird Now. Strange but endearing.

His music scares me...

The Amy MacDonald is superb. 'This Is The Life' was her debut album and the one to start with.

I'm currently listening to her brand new album, released today, and although more produced than the last one it sounds excellent so far with some really strong songwriting. Good, open sounding recording as well.

I've seem him live twice. Once in a fairly small place in Belfast. Was very good. He seems very shy though. I've gone off him slightly as for a while everything I listened to seemed to have him guesting on vocals.

As Matthew points out, This is the Life is a very good album and def the one to start with. As far as Maddy's concerned, I'd start with this one as it's great!

Then get this one if you like the last:

A friend said to me in about 1998, have you heard of Buckley? I said no I hadn't. Anyway he lent me the Grace album and the first couple of listenings I hated it - wasn't my style at all.

Then I started reading about his life and his father's.....the more I read about him, the more I played the album.

Now I've got just about everything he ever recorded (which wasn't much to be frank) including imported re-releases. Magic.

Same here, recommended to me by a friend and took 4 or 5 listens before I got it. Now it's an album I wouldn't be without.

Concur with Amy Macdonald, I see her latest one is also on vinyl, Mmmmm..........
