External DAC

I read that if using a media PC and an external DAC, the clocks of the two devices need to be synced. If they're not, quality would suffer due to increased jitter. Is that correct or have I misunderstood?
Can someone help by confirming whether the same applies when connecting a media player and an external DAC as well? I am planning to get the Cambridge audio DAC Magic and the HD Digitech HDX-1000 1TB media player.

as far as i know, what usually happens is the dac will re-clock the signal. some do this better then others.
