Hi,

Can someone please explain the relationship between dynamic and native contrast levels on lcd screens. For example have seen the Sony lcd's with contrasts of 1800:1, presumably this is native contrast. However, how would this translate to a dynamic contrast level. The new Toshiba 32inch XV series has a contrast level (dynamic I assume) of 30,000:1. How does the dynamic translate to native contrast.?

Im not entirely sure on this one, but as you have no replies so far, ill have a go... I think dynamic contrast on an LCD screen is measured where the level of the backlight is adjusted; i.e. lowered for low light footage and to imporve black levels, and increased for brighter scenes (this is done automatically by software in the TV). Therefore I assume the native or on screen contrast is is measured when the screens baclkight is constant. This leaves me to question how dynamic contrast works on Plasma screens where there is no backlight but the power input varies according to brightness. Any experts out there who would like to clarify this?
