DVD player HDMI connections?

I have recently bought a new AV receiver (Sony STR-DG820), & have tried hooking it up with my DVD player (Philips DVP5960) & LCD TV (Sharp LC-32D44SE) using 2x HDMI cables (Ixos XHT288) - one from DVD to Receiver & 1 from Receiver to TV. I don't seem to be getting either picture or sound?! Have I missed something obvious?

you probably need to select HDMI OUT on the DVD menu.

Put a scart lead from tv to dvd player and go into the settings. Select hdmi as the connection and take scart out. Job done.
