Hi all,

I have a denon dvd 1940 player connected to a toshiba 40xf355 lcd by a thor hdmi cable.

Can you please advise me on the best dvd settings for optimum picture quality as I have not been blown away by the pic.

My previous dvd player was a pioneer dv 575 ( connected by component ), and the denon is only marginally ( if at all ) better, and this upscales to 1080p.

Could this be compounded by the fact that the pioneer was so good, and the upgrade wasn't a massive jump in quality ?

Any help much appreciated.

Try using differant settings on the Denon and see what you find. You may find setting the resolution to lower or higher settings gives better results on your screen

I used to have a Pioneer DV757Ai and upgraded to a Denon 3930 which makes my old Pioneer look like some thing out of ASDA!

The Denon is an excellent player so its either the settings or a poor quality DVD disc recording - the discs do vary - some films are excellent quality recordings, others are mediocre to poor.

I've upscaled House of Flying Daggers on the Denon and it was like watching Blu Ray (albeit I haven't seen the BR version of that exact film).

Ditto with Alsone...the Denon is a quality DVD player...watched RV the other night upscaled to 720p and also on Blu Ray at a friends in 1080p......Tell me what all the hype is about...when DVD transfer is that good and only £3.97 for the DVD too...why on earth would anyone in their right mind want to fork out £14.98 for the same film on BD albeit the film has slighly more depth to it but that was about it

There's also a question of how many times you want to end up watching the same movie...I mean c'mon

Have you also noticed that the Blu Rays of the soon to be released Dark Knight and Indiana Jones films are £15.98 and £17.98 respectively while their DVD counterparts are £11.98 and £14.98...for if the DVD's came in much cheaper you wouldn't even think twice about going for the BD's which is what the film studios want you to do

However wait a few months after the release dates and the DVD's for these films will probably go down to around £7 for both films while the BD's for both will probably stay around £15

If you happen to get a good DVD transfer BD in my view can take second stage because at the end of the day, especially too right now in this uncertain economic climate, only those with more money than brains would contemplate buying BD's

I would slightly disagree with the cost of BluRay films as I managed to get Superman Returns and The Lake House for £9.99 each from of all places Toysrus. Play.com recently had 3 BD for £30 even Asda had Close Encounters for £11.99 and 300 for £9.99. The novelty of the BD is the PiP content. I have not yet paid the full asking price on recent releases owing to shopping around or using vouchers.
