So I have the Rega Planar 1. Here comes the question, do you close the Turntable lid, when the record is playing? I have found that if I open the lid, I can hear more of the percussion, the drums, the cymbals. Is this an amplifier problem, or are rurntables designed to operate without a lid?

Lid open or without a lid is the correct method.

Worst thing is to keep the lid attached and open while spining records. It serves as antenna in capturing airborn vibrations and sending them to the turntable.

I have to close mine because of cats. Not that it's a problem, being suspended it doesn't feed back at all.

I agree the old Planar 3 cover was removable for this purpose being fitted with slot-in type hinges.
