I am confused by Dolby Atmos and wondering whether to dip my toes in, the answer is probably 'no' but hopefully some of you here can clarify things for me.

So far I have one music Blu Ray that has an Atmos track on it. When I play it through my existing stereo gear it of course converts to stereo. However I have read that you can listen to Atmos on existing stereo headphones and still get 50/60% of the immersive effect.

I assume I would need to get an Atmos compatible player like this one:

And an Atmos capable receiver like this one

So am I correct, or is there a cheaper way of doing it?
I would be happy to upgrade my Blu Ray player but another £400 for the receiver is probably a step too far especially since I am unlikely to have that many Atmos Blu Ray discs to make it worthwhile. (I have no intention of buying all the speakers needed for it and no interest in streaming btw.)

Thanks if anyone can help.

Well I just phoned Richer Sounds and they confirmed I am right in my thinking. Spending £379 on a Denon receiver to just use it as a headphone amp is hardly worth it. There may be other cheaper streaming options but that's a different kettle of fish. Hopefully there will be some kind of dac/headphone amp in the future that will do the job cheaper.

Download APPs for consules like Xbox for Atmos
You need 7 to 16 speakers for Full Atmos

So it's pointless trying to utilise Atmos with a standard pair of headphones.......

Some Apple headphones, and others too are Dolby Atmos capable - that is they have certain implementations specific to headphones. Apple calls it Spatial Audio on their headphones.

Also note, with exception of the Nakamichi Dragon, the Dolby Atmos implementation on soundbars is different to that on AV receivers. Dolby force this restriction, and Nakamichi had some convincing to do to Dolby to use the AVR/processor version.
