I have read a claim that you can test the worthwhileness of an audiophile mains cable by checking it with a cable detector, the type you run along a wall to find cables. If it beeps, your cable is not properly shielded. Mine is at my parents. Does anyone else want to have a go and see if that is true and if so how do the different makes rate?

Interesting one.

I can't see it being correct though as some cables use a tinned copper braid under the first / outer insulation which would surely be picked up by a detector ?

Most of mine are braided, I assume the test isnt for them?

And surely the detector would pick up the ACTUAL shielding wouldnt it?

I don't know, thats why hopefully has a detector to try this out. I will on the RA mains extension cable and the Woolworths one I use when I get mine back.

the items you are on about often work on heat/magnectic fields that ac cause so i guess if the cable is totally shielded then the magnectic fields might be low so it is a good question look forward to seeing the answers.
