Digital co-ax cables

Can someone clear up for me whether a digital coax cable, from my bluray to DAC, is any different from an RCA interconnect cable, please? I tried using an RA phono cable, but got no signal. Co-ax aerial cable doesn't fit, so that's no good.

The Panasonic bluray player only has co-ax digital output.

Thanks,

Geoff

You can use a standard rca phono lead as a temporary option but digital coaxial leads are rated at 75ohms ideally. It may be a bit hit and miss with the former and therefore may not always work - I have used rca phono leads before which worked but perhaps I was lucky in that its specs allowed this.

the_lhc:I believe the impedance of a digital co-ax cable is completely different to that of an RCA phono interconnect.

I think some phono interconnects can be used as digital coaxial - they need to be 75 ohms don't they? The RCA is just the connection and most digital coaxial inputs are RCA.

That's weird. Even our oldest Panasonic DVD recorder (not even BluRay) has an optical digital output for audio.

What's the model number?

Agreed the interconnect is best if rated at 75 ohm. Best to buy one that actually states '75ohm digital co-ax' to be sure it will work.

Agreed with Chebby, as far as I know all Panasonics have an optical out.....this must be a weird one!

Maybe his DAC only has coaxial or it has one optical and he's using it for another source.

Sorry, chaps, broke off for dinner. I have a Panasonic DMR-BW780, the Freeview HD/bluray recorder. As far as I can see, lookin at the back of the machine, there's only a co-ax digital ou socket and the three phono outputs, L/R audio & (yellow) video. There's no mention at all in the manual re audio out connection. I'm hoping to use my CYP DAC, via my 72/140/ Doublets, to improve the sound of bluray films, rather than the tv output.

My CYP has only optical and co-ax inputs, and I've just spotted the little red light is lit, which I don't remember seeing previously.

Watch this space.......

Good news, my RCA phono i/c is now working. Perhaps the DAC wasn't properly powered up earlier, but it seems ok now, both on optical from my Foxsat HDR and via co-ax from the Panny. I think I'll invest in a proper 75-ohm lead. Thanks for your prompt responses, O venerable ones.

The DMR-BW780 does have an optical digital output. From the specifications...

"Optical terminal (PCM, Dolby Digital, DTS, MPEG), / Coaxial terminal
(PCM, Dolby Digital, DTS, MPEG), / HDMI terminal (PCM, Dolby Digital,
DTS, MPEG, Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby TrueHD, / DTS-HD Master Audio,
DTS-HD High Resolution Audio)"

If you look at this picture of the rear of your unit you can see it marked 'Optical' right next to the coax output.

Hi GeofferyW

If Panasonic have supplied a yellow cable with the unit then i'll recommend you use this with your 780.

All the best

Rick @ Musicraft

Thanks for that, Chebby. As the rear of the player isn't easy to access in situ, I was unable to spot it, and the manual only has pictures of the front, with aerial, RF, HDMI and scart sockets. As the Humax only has Optical, it works out ok, with my DAC having one optical and one co-ax connection, with a selector switch.

Good evening, Rick @ Musicraft, Panasonic don't appear to have supplied a yellow lead, only their own HDMI lead. i've got a Qunex P75 on it's way.
