Clare,
Many thanks - response much appreciated. Perhaps I could take this opportunity to check on next steps; I'm in a real quandry!! To give context, I'm presently stuck working in Saudi Arabia, with very limited access to HiFi and/or demo opportunities. Have waited 30years to get my first HiFi system, and with 15years of violin playing behind me, I've a pretty sensitive and intolerant ear. Not interested in instant impact, thumping base type systems that tire the ears after a couple of tracks - am investing in a real HiFi that presents music (and films) unadulterated, with as deep and wide a soundfield as possible. Needs to pick out detail that other systems just can't - but not clinically, and offering musical and compelling basenotes but that never tire or sound 'synthesized'. Musical tastes mixed; prefer real instruments, but some music I also like is electronic, so system needs to cope with that too.
SPEAKERS-I've taken the plunge with the Mordaunt-Short Performance system as after extensive research I feel it best meets my need for neutral reproduction, but flexible capabilities, and when I add the 2's, developing a good HomeCinema setup + wider soundfield. Ultimately the real clincher was the combined use of advanced technology, the P6 LE's superb design, and that 'hair-raising' experience!
CD & AMPS - Wishlist=Oracle CD2500MKII and comparable Amps, but current PS3+Onxyo SR-804 setup as stopgap just don't cut it now that I have decent speakers. Still moving so need to keep system as compact as possible (P6's notwithstanding!). Cyrus were a wishlist favourite for years, but then I realised that perhaps I needed to budget higher if I want a deeper/broader soundfield. Of other 'half-size' modules, I'm now looking seriously at:
- Chord Choral
- NuForce Reference V9SE (Class D systems - perfect size and low energy consumption)
- Bryston 9B/14B-SST's and even
- Pathos Digit as interesting alternatives; but have only found a couple of reviews out there, so can only GUESS at how any of these would sound with the Performance 6SE's.
So really need help - without committing anyone to anything, could I get some thoughts on
1) How would the Chord system sound with the P6?
2) and the NuForce reference system?
3) Would a Cyrus setup be comparable in terms of depth and breadth?
4) If I want such a wide soundfield should I be going for an 'american sound' eg: AudioResearch or Krell?
Or: would any of these be good with the MS's, but choosing the right connecting cables is what will make the real difference between them?
Class A seems just too big and energy hungry; Class D looking more attractive.
Any steer much appreciated!
Alex
