Did I make the right choice?

Hi Guys,

First post so be kind 🙂 ive recently purchased an Onkyo 606 with Mordaunt Short Alumni 5.1 and a Samsung BDP1500.

Did i make the right decision. To me it sounds great but tbh i am new to all this, although i did do some research before i purchased.

Im still messing around with things atm because like i said im new to this and there is a lot of settings and stuff i have no clue about 🙂

If it sounds good to you, that's all that matters. You sure bought some solid kit that should work really well together.

I own the onkyo 605, I've had it for a few months now and it still amazes me. So as far as the amp is concerned, for the money, i think you've made a great choice, imho.

As for the settings. I found just exploring the menu over the course of time, without actually changing anything, and a quick look through the instruction manual from time to time, was all part of the fun of owning a good home cinema av amp.

Trial and error won't send you to far wrong with the 606, and if it does just reset and re-run the set-up.

Mordaunt-Short Alumni has great look, and claimed by the brand company as an improved technology in Avant range.

Good choice, SnoopY. For this price level, you sure got solid products.

I think Blu-Ray Disc Player wise, for about the same money, the Sony 350 (cannot remember the full model name and number) might have been better, but the Samsung 1500 is a good solid Blu-Ray Disc Player.

Speaker-package wise, the Mordaunt-Short package is a good one. Otherwise, I know that the KEF 'egg' KHT-series loudspeakers are extremely popular, or the MT-series from B&W, but it sounds great to you, and what sounds great to YOU is the most important thing.

Calibrating is one of the most important crucial aspect of having a good surround sound set-up, so take your time, and it would pay to invest in a manual sound pressure meter, and to manually calibrate volume levels (to your main seating position), and also to manually measure how far each loudspeaker is from you in your usual seating position and manually in-putting the distances into the 606. I am not a big fan of the automatic mic-assisted Audyssey systems that come standard with A/V Receivers. I have found the best results - for me - seem to come from my manually setting everything up myself.
