Please excuse my complete and utter ignorance with this question, but what exactly does the Denon AVR - 1909 do and why do i need one (or something like it). As far as i can tell its a 'multichannel reciever'. Is that the same as a Sky HD box (which i aleady have and therefore do not need anything else) or is something you attach to your Sky HD box, Blue Ray player and speakers to make a complete home cinema system.

Sorry for what im guessing is a very stupid question. I've now bought my new tv (sony KDL40X3500)and im trying to get everything ordered.

Thanks in advance.

If you want to enjoy full surround sound from your Sky HD box, then you'll need an external multichannel amplifier or receiver like the Denon AVR-1909, plus front, centre and rear speakers and a subwoofer. The amp or receiver will take the audio output from the Sky box and feed it to all the speakers for proper 5.1 surround sound (left and right front channels, centre channel, rear channels and the subwoofer for extra bass).

If you just connect the Sky box to your TV, you will only get stereo sound. Quite a few programmes are now broadcast with Dolby Surround if you have the necessary equipment to decode the audio signal.

Andy,

really appreciate your comments, especially as i know nothing about this stuff.

So got my tv, got my Sky Box, going to get a Denon AVR 1909 and now need to find some speakers. I'll get someone to hook it all up for me and tell me what cables i need.

Thanks Very Much
