Whenever I turn my Denon on the volume has changed back to -40dB and I have to turn it back up to -18Db (is this a reasonable level, I can actually go higher and is still not overly loud, just dont want to annoy neighbours) in order to get sound but then if I change source from SKY to DVD is goes back to -40dB again, can I stop this ?

Try this:

Menu---> Manual setup--->Option setup --->Volume control --->Power on Lev

It sounds like you have this set to -40dB. If so change it to "last".

its better to have a mild level sound predefines than change sources and get a sudden increase in power

yes u can! it,s right there in the set up menu

bring up the set up on screen menue

1.click on manual setup

2.click on option

3. click on Volume control

4. Power on level and then from there u can choose the level u want it.

-18DB is a good level , if u just activate the audyssey Daynamic EQ , it will make the right adjustment to the freq. response that u are listning at a reference level .

That works when I switch on, but once on if I switch between sources it goes back to -40dB
