I could, and going on average once every 8 years to a gig it would convince even the most sceptical of aesthetes.

Guess what? Between the Kandy K2 and the Cyrus 8 XP I chose... The Primare I30. I know, I know, it's at another price league. I just hope my B&W 685 will be enough to survive untill I have the funds to give it a pair of speaker of it's class. Damn! It's expensive but I know I would never rest knowing what could have been... Now I just have to find a way to deal with the guilt feeling for indulging my desire for hifi...

Oh dear! You mad fool, you!

I hope the delivery costs aren't too high and that you know a team of strong power-lifters - it's a heavy brute - don't do yourself an injury lifting it into its place. Once over that hurdle, I am sure you will love it. Keep us updated.

In the meantime, I can recommend a good psycho-analyst...

Nahhhh, no way. But why??

As for the I30 I ordered it from a spanish shop from Bilbau, nearer than the Lisbon one. The price tag on the amplifier was 1420£. The delivery fee is 12£. Not bad, don't you think?

As for it's weight... that's the least of my concern. Hehehehe. I would lift the double if it cost half....

I have bought from that store before (supersonido.es) they were always ok. And they deliver fast to here. Check the store out, they have good prices and a lot of hifi products.

I'll keep updating my experience.

That's not a bad price, brand new. The delivery is excellent value. Just wear your truss and you'll be OK.

When the CD31 & I30 were delivered to my workplace in a single box, they had to be carried in by two strapping delivery guys!

I opened the box and found they were boxed separately inside, so was able to carry them to the car individually without undue problem. Mind you, single-handedly getting the I30 safely into its new home was a bit nerve-wracking.

We look forward to hearing your first impressions.

They have a reputation for indecision, I think, maybe.

My odd sense of humour found the process mildly amusing: two choices A or B..? I know I'll take C!

Been there, done that, got the...ah, guess what, it was the Primare, too!

Hello. I have been reading reviews like crazy trying to decide between these two amps. The big problem is I live in Portugal and nevermind the advice of LISTENING to the amplifiers in question. I can't! Both the importers of Cyrus and Roksan are in Lisbon only and I live almost 400 miles away.

My currents gear consists of B&W 685, Pioneer A400, DacMagic, CD Nad C541, Chord Crimson interconnects and Chord Carnival Silverscreen Bi-Wire.

I enjoy the sound I have right now, I think the A400 does a good job but I've been wanting more for some time. The A400 is 60wpc and although the sound has definition I feel I wanted more control over the speakers. Also I'm looking for better stereo imaging and soundstage where maybe the entry level pioneer just can't compete with amplifiers of another class.

So, based on the reviews and the amplifiers I can buy from a shop in Portugal (warranty) I have shortlisted these two. I know the amplifier of the same level as the 8 XP is the Roksan Caspian but the WHF review mentions that it only sounds its best at higher volumes, which I will rarely do. Also I would only be willing to step a bit up pricewise for the Cyrus.

Could anyone give me some pointers about this? Would the B&W 685 do justice to the Cyrus? (I would also be inclined to change the speakers if the Cyrus is THAT good. I am also ready to upgrade the sources for the same reasons.

How about the Kandy? I read that it has a slightly rolled off top end, which sweetens the sound a little, and I like a lot of treble detail (but not miss the bottom end!). What I am looking for is the most balanced amplifier at the price.

HELP!

What sort of music do you like?

Too late, Joel, the Primare I30 is on its way, mate! Or are you just practising your chat-up lines?

I listen to a wide range of styles. From Jazz (Miles Davis, Charles Mingus, Art Blakey, Keith Jarrett, Coltrane, Cannonball Aderley...) to alternative rock (Nick Cave, Radiohead, Cure, The Smiths, Patti Smith, Vampire Weekend, Bauhaus, Beach House, Department Of Eagles...) to electronic, not the most heavy stuff like techno or house (Air, Jean-Michel Jarre, Fever Ray, Micro Audio Waves) and also a lot from pop-rock classics (Bowie, Beatles, Clash, Depeche Mode, Doors...). And many, many more that don't fall in any specific category...

Yeah, I know the amp must do everything.

My I30 is actually making some improvements in the sound of albums I had found disappointing, somehow extracting a bit of extra detail or soundstage.

Well, it has arrived. First thing, the company got the order wrong and sent me the silver version of the I30. I got ******! Sent them an email and assured me that a transport would be here by thursday with the correct version and would pick up the silver. Nevertheless, a litle bit of a hassle.

But of course... did I plug it? Guess...

It's beautifully made, fabulous finish, pure class. Quite heavy, 15 kilos. Dual mono...

Connected it to my sources, Nad C541 CD player and all my 500 gb of lossless music from the hard drive connected to a DacMagic usind Foobar with WASAPI protocol (bypasses the windows sound processing and sends bit perfect signal to the DAC). Ok, let's turn it on.

Right from the start, it sounded a little too gentle. Kept listening, played around with the speakers a little, sat down and listened to "Kind Of Blue" from Miles Davis.

WOW! HUGE soundstage, almost got me scared! Fabulous imaging, I was siting in the studio, the drums and the bass on the wright, piano on the left, one trumpet took the center stage slightly to the wright, played the first part of "All Blues", then the other trumpet played his part on the center left, closer to the piano and then... Miles showed up at the center, playing from the heavens, above everything else, with his flawless technique and heart. I never heard this record with such a pinpoint accuracy, out of this world. Terrific timing, superb detail.

I thought I was dead and gone to heaven. (I'm not exagerating, that's what I felt, although I have to say I didn't listen to many amplifiers of this price range)

Right, the amplifier had warmed up, it was time for something faster, fuller and louder. The Mars Volta would do the trick, super fast guitars, pretty difficult timing to handle and accelarations. Perfect. The smoothness where it should be (drum kick), the attack on the cymbals, the tonality of the high voice. Fantastic.

All I can say is that I am marveled. It's 10 to midnight here and I didn't stop listening for a minute. I have a winner. It's even more than I expected. I cannot thing how it would sound with more high end sources and maybe different speaker, although I have to say that the B&W's (685) are sounding heavenly.

I just noticed, I touched the top surface, it's really hot! Don't know if it's supposed to, but the A400 never got this hot....

I am really glad you are pleased with the Primare I30 - at the price you expect to hear something good! I am waiting for a few more opportunities to give mine a proper chance to sing.

I have noted the soundstage in my room seems slightly biased to the right, so I need to make an adjustment somewhere - it's chiefly down to room acoustics/speaker locations, I believe. Good quality hi-fi can't work miracles!

As for the heat? Yes, I have noted that mine gets hot (and can agree that the Pioneer A400 I tried doesn't). Just make sure you give it plenty of ventilation room.
