Hi everyone I have just joined today, so please bear with me on this!!

I have had a Toshiba 36ZP38B for nearly 5 years now and to be honest it was probably the best CRT I have owned. Over the past year or so it developed a few problems and was fixed. However this last time they had to take it away to the workshop as problems persisted.

Now, they have had it for over 6 weeks so I decided to cut my losses and enforce the 42 day ruling, whereby Currys must provide me with vouchers to replace the TV with an amount that will buy a tv of the same or higher specification. I found out today that value will be £699.00.

I would greatly appreciate all comments especially from the experts as to whether this is a fair amount? And if so what Plasma (preferably) or Lcd TV I could by that has the same spec as my original Toshiba?

I have posted a link which shows the spec of my old TV.

Sounds like a fair price. You can get the TH-42PX80 for £697 HERE and even better, John Lewis will price match this store and give you a 5 year warranty... which is what I did. I got rid of a perfectly fuctioning 28in Panny CRT for this set, and I am really pleased with my choice.

If he's been issued the vouchers under Curry Whatever Happens he'll have to spend them at Currys. They will only match high street shops, so it might be worth getting a written quote of the John Lewis price match and seeing if they will match that. Otherwise, the 37" PX80 is a whopping £799 at the moment, and the 42" £100 more.

Sound and Vision is a high street store. The high street may be in Bolton, but it is still available in store, so anyone with a price match policy should go with it!
are you looking for the same sorta size like 37"?
Yes, 37 - 42" max really, my viewing distance is going to be 2.5m.

I understand completely that my old tv is no longer being made, and that it would be hard for Currys to get a match especially since large CRT's aren't really made anymore. But my main gripe with the amount is that my toshiba tv had, 5.1 dolby digital decoder, with built in woofer & 4 speakers, (OK not great quality but still there) Front inputs including S video. At the rear, 3 scarts of which 1 is RGB, plus 1 component connection and 2 optical inputs also. Does the fact that the new plasmas have HDMI connections make this a pointless argument anyway?

I am quite willing to put extra cash towards the vouchers to get a better setup, but I think I might try to push my luck and demand more for the fact the the toshiba had the 5.1 surround sound included. What do you think?

Thanks again!!

There are plenty of inputs/outputs on the Panny for you to play with. The sound you got out of the Tosh was probably rubbish by todays separate standards. You will not find a decent Plasma TV with a system like that, but I would recommend the Sony DAV-IS10 for a one box solution (WHFSAV award winner!). As I mentioned above, I would go for the TH-42PX80 price matched at Sound and Vision Bolton... and seeing as the Editor in Cheif of the magazine agreed with me, you'd be a fool not to.

(i'll let you off if you go for the TH-37PX80 if you need the money for the surround)

Generally speaking when PRICE MATCH is being tried the other store with the lower price has to be within a stated distance from the actual store that you are visiting and the item must be in stock, worth a try tho.

What ever you do do not be tempted at this screen size by the EVIL that is LCD!!!!

At this size and above PLASMA reigns supreme!!!

You've had a right touch to get that money for a 5 yo CRT tv - have a look on e bay and see what they are going for - you'd be lucky to get half that!

Use the vouchers and get the 37" Panasonic PX80 and you will have some left over to put to a decent surround system - although the tv's sound is perfectly adequate IMO.

Welcome to the Forums!

I second Tom83cat above - the 42in Pana is a superb set, and awesome value for money.

Thanks for the great advice.

I've just looked at this TV, connections look good but shouldn't I get a 1080p tv if possible (noticed this one is 1080i) even if it means throwing some more cash into it?

I also have a Panasonic DMR EX75 HDD/DVD recorder which I believe has a built in upscaler and HDMI output, I am looking at upgrading to Sky HD and purchasing a Blu-ray player in the next 6 months?

As before all comments appreciated.

FullHD is not worth the money.... you would have to put in considerable amount more to get a decent one. I recently had £1300 to blow, i decided that the 42PX80 was the best bet, even though it was half what i had to spend... i basically thought the extra £400 for the PZ85 was nowhere near worth it. See if Currys will price match Sound and Vision

Yes, the vouchers have to be used at Currys, Currys Digital or Dixons (somehow, although they dont actually have any high street stores now??!!)

I got a price match from John Lewis Bristol, took this to my local Currys today, and was told by a manager that they will not price match the JL price match as this isn't their true price but a price match price. He also said that they only price match within a 10 mile radius of the store and that this is a Currys policy.

I went to Comet next to see if they do the same tv, they do and at £899, but this is on a special at the moment which includes a panny 5.1 surround sound dvd player, and a glass stand. However this isnt on their website so I have no way of getting a price match, and I'm not sure whether they price match special offers anyway?

Dixons is not treated as a different company despite being in the same DSGi group as Currys. Matching the Currys website is a possibility, most stores will do that nowadays as they Currys site prices have gone up a bit and Dixons has come down, as they're online only now.

As for the packages again that's going to be an iffy subject. It could go either way with that, depending on the manager I guess. Technically I think it's only for matching products, not packages, so you might not get away with that. Best bet will be to keep your eye on the price in Currys and other well known high street shops. The 42PX80 for example is (I think) £799 at Richer Sounds at the minute so if you can get to a Currys near one of them you should be alright with that.

Another little loophole in the pricematch policy though is that the item has to actually be in stock. They might not bother to check but they can refuse to price match if it's out of stock too.
