Hello

I have an old Pioneer XV DV77 that I have always connected to my TV using an S Video to scart lead but on buying a new Samsung LE32B450 TV the picture from the DVD is black and white. On contacting Samsung they told me the scart is RGB and S Video isn't. I am not remotely technical so have no idea what thsi means and when they suggested another way of connecting the DVD system I am not sure there is another way?? Can anyone help?

Just as you have by buying your TV, sometimes you have to accept it's time for some new kit. Your Pioneer was good back in the day, but - as you're finding out - technology has moved on, and your new flatscreen is looking for a new partner.

It may be possible to hook up the Pioneer to the Samsung via different cable combinations - perhaps component video and optical or phono (i'd need to source the relevant manuals), but for the cost of the cabling required, you could buy the superb Toshiba SD-390E DVD player that connects up via the latest, HDMI connection. Great offer here - £38 including HDMI cable.

If you've got a little more cash to splash, then Sony's excellent budget Blu-ray player - the BDP-S360 - can be had for £150, and will do a great job with DVDs, too.

Moving up in money - but offering the complete surround sound experience - Panasonic's SC-BT200 is a fantastic Blu-ray/DVD system, which can be had for @£470.

I appreciate, of course, that having just bought a new TV, you might not want to splash out again, but hopefully there's some food for thought there.. or it's back to those manuals!

Hi,

The DV 77 just has RF (aerial) and an s-video output I believe. To be brutally honest, if you've bought an HD ready TV you'd be better off buying either a new DVD player with upscaling and HDMI output or even a cheap Blu-Ray player which will upscale DVDs. S-video pictures won't be very good compared to RGB or HDMI as it was an analogue pre-cursor to the much better quality RGB and then HDMI. The specification for the scart connector does allow for an S-video signal to be passed but it's only any good if the manufacturer has installed the circuitry on the scart input to decode it. You could find an s-video to RGB converter box but really you'll end up spending money on something which is only doing your new TV no favours when a new dvd or Blu-ray will give you a far better end result.

Hope it helps,

Rob

Hi,

I also the xv dv77, And i also had problems with b&w pics, At the moment i have a cheap bray for playing old dvds etc, but i do not get surround sound working on bray due to not coding properly, You should have an optical in and out on your system of which someone may help you. I also am not into all the jargon so can not help any further

Hopr this helps
