component cable grain

I have the following equipment (tv purchased last December).

LCD TV : Philips 37PFL5522D

DVD Rec : Panasonic DMR-ES20D

Component cables : Pure AV (Curry's £34.99)

There is very noticeable grain, especially in facial skin tones, when I play a dvd (e.g. Pearl Harbor, Saving Private Ryan) via the component cables although the picture is "sharper" than via scart.

If I opt for the scart connection the picture has no grain but that defeats the object of investing in component cables for a supposed better picture.

Has anyone any idea what causes this grain problem and how I can resolve it? Is it the LCD TV input, the cable or the dvd recorder? Help!!

I used to run my dvd player using component. I must say i used a qed component cable and the picture was very good. But getting to the point the two dvd's you describe are probably not the best movies for testing with as i find saving private ryan to be quite dark, grainy and washed out colour pallette which i believe the director ha intended to do like with the 300 movie. Try some other material, there are some good ones recommended in teh recent issue of this 'whf magazine' and if you still have problems then try running a thx set-up and lowering the colour and sharpness.

hope this helps. Maybe others can help you more on here.

Thanks Paul.

The two films I mentioned are not the only ones with this grain problem. I have already done the THX setup on the TV so I am rather bewildered as to what to do next. I don't want to spend a fortune on buying more expensive component cables and being left with the redundant Pure AV ones in case I get the same problem.

I have even considered updating the dvd recorder to the Panasonic DMR EZ27 (think that's the code) which can be bought for £130 and use an HDMI cable. Will this abolish the grain and improve the picture on standard dvd playback? I'm not considering going down the Bluray route for several years.

I would be grateful for some feedback and wonder if anybody else has experienced the same problem

This is going to sound daft but have you thought of using some electrical component cleaner (like Servisol for example) and making sure that both the connectors AND the sockets are clean and free off grease and dust? A £4 - 5 pound can of spray cleaner sounds like a better deal than new cabless or a new DVD player! I clean the plugs on my SCART's every now and then, just to keep them clean and you'd be suprised how greasy sockets can get on your TV during the manufacturing / stoeage process.
Sounds stupid I know but it may help :)

I again, i think you should pitch this one to the experts then. I think the main prob maybe your phillips lcd as i used to have a lcd and suffered similar probs but not anymore now i got a quality plasma.

Interesting thought on the sockets cleaning but the TV and component cables are less than 3 months old.

I would certainly welcome the experts' views. Any thoughts Andrew, Clare, Andy?
