Compact set up

Hi, Im looking to bring my turntable (Technics SL1210-MK2) to my uni house, the only thing is space is limited. I was thinking of getting the NAD d 3020, connect the turntable to that and then obviously speakers. Im really not that great with audio so im not sure if this is a good or bad set up as such? Would i also need to buy a phono pre amp for this? the reason i like the NAD is the bluetooth option so i can play from my phone/laptop also.

Yes you will need to buy a phono preamp to connect the turntable.

could you suggest any that arent really high priced? other than that, with some nice speakers would this set up work alright?

Assuming you have a moving magnet cartridge on the TT, a Project PhonoBox MM for £50 would do the trick.

A slightly more expensive option would be the Regards Phono Mini A2D (£89). This would allow you to record vinyl to the laptop if this was a requirement.

Slap on a decent pair of speakers and you should have no problem with it as a system.

been looking for the NAD d 3020 and i think im going to get a bundle the sevenoaks are doing where it includes some speakers.

on a seperate note, ive decided to change the stylus on this TT, looking to get the ortofon om5E cartridge, does anyone have any opinion on this?

By the time you replace the cartridge, buy a phono stage, the NAD and some speakers, if you really do want a compact system, you could buy instead a project or Audio Technica TT with built in phono stage and USB with some active speakers with Bluetooth for your digital music.

Project essential 2 USB TT (which comes with the OM5e pre fitted) is £285 or Audio Technica AT LP 120 £205. Add some active speakers like the Q Accoustics BT3 or Ruark MR1 and you have a very compact, very versatile system.

well currently i have the above TT, and a real mash up of free equipment i could find. im using a random mixer, plugged into an old stereo and it sounds terrible! so anything is better.

ive just seen on sevenoaks they are selling the nad at £399 which is the same price as every other store, and they come with a free pair of q acoustics 2020i speakers, so i think thats a pretty decent deal.

In the future, i may purchase a pro-ject TT as they seem decent and have a nice enough cartridge. for now i will just buy a relatively cheap pre amp and see how it goes, probably change the cartridge after christmas, any you could reccomend for the sl1210 mk2?

Where does the preamp come into it? Do you mean to eventually connect to the NAD?

In this case you need a phono preamp, they are different.

What's your budget for a cartridge?

What cartridge do you currently have and what do you want to get out of changing it? Are you looking for a step up in sound for example, and at what budget. The reason for asking is if your budget is low and your existing cartridge is half decent but old, a new stylus may be a better use of your money.

sorry for the huge delay in replying. I have sorted it all out now and works brilliant

My current setup is a technics sl1210 mk2,project phonobox mm, NAD D3020 and a pair of Q Acoustic 3020's. Sounds really good and im happy with it!

Sevenoaks were doing a deal with NAD and a pair of q acoustic 2020, but when i ordered the black 2020's were out of stock so got a free upgrade to the 3020's, chuffed!

I also decided to upgrade from the stanton to the Ortofon 2m Red, havent tested it yet but it will definetly be an improvement from the old battered one.
