Choosing songs for demo

I've been trying to choose some songs for my demo tomorrow.

So much I could take. So many I've used in the past but I now have other music that I think is better for testing. I've chosen a selection of tracks from across several different genres – rock, pop, classical, dance – from albums I listen to often. I've got some that I've used for previous demo's plus a few I've not used for demo’s before.

Do you take the same music to demo’s, change each time or just take a selection of your favourite albums and go with the flow and your mood?

Well I like a change I get fed hearing the same music over and over again. Take some that will test the system for instance have you got some music with double bass or deep bass guitar, another area to test is drum cymbals, I have found with some speakers they can get annoying after a while. Piano is another good test. Apart than that take a variety of music you listen to, vocals as well as the general genres you list. Take some not so good recordings and an album you don't like that much, see if the system can make a difference. Don't just take your best recorded albums, thats what hifi shops do in their demos.

I find some jazz quite a good test if you have piano, double bass and drums.

My list so far: Dire Straits, Guns n Roses, Pink Floyd, Michael Nyman, James Last, Corrs unplugged, Gladiator OST, Cream Live 2000, Madonna.

Plus a few others just in case.

Also take some songs that you've listened to a thousand times, that you really know inside out. This way you'll know if the demo does it for you.
My 2p worth.

You have to take a token classical recording, it is expected.

I like Vivaldi's Quattro Formaggi.

I like Vivaldi's Quattro Formaggi.

I've always found that piece to be a bit cheesy.

For a long time the Vivaldi was very much the token classical work, we got so bored that we took to calling it by the above name, when that awful Nigel Kennedy version started to appear with some regularity we banned it alltogether.

At one stage we put up a board listing our least favourite records and the penalty fees that were required in order to play them, Dire Straits featured very strongly, BIBA was No 1 for a long time but Fleetwood Mac, Phil Collins and Pink Ffloyd among others featured heavily.

Most of our customers thought it was a hoot, some even offering to actually pay (it was for charity) but mostly it was just a bit of a laugh, we even took to putting some of our customers recommendations on the list. I can only remember one person getting the hump, possibly bcause he only brought 4 or 5 records and they were all on the list......

Very nearly as boundless as the complete failure of any sense of humour in the hi-fi industry in general and this forum in particular.
