The Bose 251 is an outdoor speaker is it not? Its a £900 amp and a £400 speaker, would it not make more sense to upgrade the speakers?

100% spot on. Change the speakers, not the amp.

You also have a 'so so' CD player that was £130 eleven years ago (when new) and is certainly not going to match the Nait 5i for quality.

Obviously a new Naim CD5i is going to be pricey (unless you get a good used one). I would suggest trying to find a good ex-demo/used Rega Apollo (not the latest Apollo-R).

the Naim sounds much better if you change the speakers as has beeen suggested already, try the new KEF R series for example the R 300 or R 700

Just to reinforce the current opinion but your amp is the single strongest component of your system, that would be the last thing I’d be looking to change.

I have an Arcam CD92, Arcam Delta290 and Castle Avon speakers. Would like to step significantly from the Delta290. Does the board have any interesting ideas?

Do you fancy sticking with Arcam or looking at other manufacturers? What's your budget? Do you want to buy new or will you consider second hand?

Budget up to $2000. Probably looking at new since limited supply of used in Toronto. Thinking of a change from Arcam.

Sound is nice and warm right now but seeking greater clarity/more detail.

The best component of your system is the Naim Nait 5i. Before taking any conclusion, you should upgrade the loudspeakers and digital source. After that, if you still find the sonic result unsatisfatory, then you may consider the possibility of upgrading your amplification.

Moreover, moving from Naim Nait 5i to Musical Fidelity M3 is not an improvement.

I don't wish to be rude Starbucks, but you would probably be better off starting your own thread rather than hijacking another one. Hope that makes sense.

Price-wise, I agree with you,; but if you don't like the way the Naim sounds, it would certainly be an improvement to the OP, provided he liked the MF.

CNO, give the guy a break. The amp has nothing to do with it.

AL, how are you....and where are those pictures of the speakers you made!?

I am not the arbiter of taste. The OP obviously likes his Bose, and asked for an alternative presentation to that given by the Naim. Since he didn't give a budget, I didn't stray too far away.

If you all can convince him to change his speakers, I'll be happy to throw in the odd suggestion.

Poltergeist, out of interest is there a reason that you are using outdoor speakers in your system? As others have said your amp is the best thing you have got by far, and it would make sense to start gradually rebuilding around it as funds allow.

But first it would make a lot of sense to either find a dealer that has that amp and demo some different front ends and speakers with it, or take it with you to a non-Naim dealer and again try some different combos - that way you will know whether it really is the amp you want to change or (more likely) the speakers and CD player.

Also, you don't give your budget, but it is always worthwhile keeping an eye on ex-dem stock at the dealers (particularly for CD players and speakers whose models change far more frequently than amps so there is often a last years model going cheap).
