Hi,

First of all let me ask, i found these speakers under the "hi-fi" section at superfi so i don't know if they work well for home cinema..

secondly would a denon AVR-X1000 drive them well? as they are rated at 500 watts and i look at specs of a/v receiver and it says power output 5x145W. does this mean i can only buy speakers that are rated at 145W or below? if so i dont know what i'm going to do for my front speakers as i am on a tight budget

I can't find much info regarding the speakers online, not even on their own website which is a worry, but that amp is realistically rated at 80 watts RMS. I dare say the speakers have peak power handling of 500, but can't be sure due to lack of info. Realistically, if they are halfway efficient, the amp should drive them fine. Though you really should test them out and try and find out more about them before plonking money on them.

Please don't take this the wrong way Nugget, but personally I wouldn't touch speakers like this with a barge pole. They're designed to wow potential customers by their size and number of drivers, but will not be getting the most from your system. At the very least, don't purchase these speakers without hearing them first.

if these speakers indicate your budget, I'd consider taking your amp into your local Richer Sounds, tell them your budget, and ask them to play a couple of pairs of speakers they'd recommend for the Denon. Most stores will have a clearance line of last year's products that'll be better value again. Ask them if there's anything in their clearance offers that might suit. I'd concentrate at the moment just on your main left & right speakers, getting the best quality ones you can afford, then as your budget allows, add matching centre and rear speakers later.

Don't be misled by watts and spec sheets. Use your ears instead. Speakers like this will be EASILY out-performed by decent stand-mounters from reputable brands like Q Acoustics, Dali or Monitor Audio.

If you knew what you were doing, I'd consider secondhand on Ebay, but I'm sure there are plenty of even experienced contributors to this forum who've made mistakes buying blind this way. It sounds like you really need to demo, in which case I'd consider the Richers option.

Sorry if that's not the answer you're looking for.

Thanks for the info. i'll test them out at superfi with the denon avr-x2000 a/v receiver and see how they sound. if it's not to my ears i will look at other options, can small "bookshelf speakers" be used for the front left and right for home cinema? these are a lot cheaper than some proper floorstanders which might be out of my budget. however if the speakers and centre are powerful enough i may not want a subwoofer to add to the system.

wharfedale diamond 121's a good option?
