Okay, im looking to vary up my steady diet of altern rock / folk with a few bites of something more jazzy.

Is there any music with a double bass or a cello as the predominant instrument that anyone can recommend? Im looking for something very well produced and mastered that'll sparkle on my system.

Many thanks

Arthur Russell http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arthur_Russell_%28musician%29 was a cellist who produced a varied array of music - some odd, some possibly terrible, some funky, some beautiful and much encompassing all the above... The World of Arthur Russell on Soul Jazz is probably the best jumping off point.

You could always try something like The Meteors, Stray Cats or Living End they have a double bass. Lol

I dont think this is the sort of thing you had in mind but you should definately have a listen. Its great stuff.

Making Bones album by Red Snapper.

Heres a wee review courtesy of amazon.Better than I couldve put it!!
Red Snapper would like to let you believe they've traded in their
samplers for a drum kit and upright bass. Assembling a retro,
jazz-inspired, live-sounding, up-tempo, instrumental hip-hop record,
the British group has shed its former movie-soundtrack guise. As is
fashionable in the breakbeat scene, they go heavy on the electric jazz
samples, but unlike their contemporaries they know exactly when to use
them; they have just the right measurement of both organic and
synthetic. Tracks like "The Sleepless" and "The Tunnel" reap the
powerful benefits of both worlds but without the pretension of some
beret-wearing charlatan telling you this is real music.

If you can find a copy cheap try Exercices Des Styles by Les Gammas a brilliant album.

The Cinematic Orchestra stuff is well recorded also.

But if you want to try something a bit different (probably best desbribed a Jazz Dance) try this

Reconstruction by Zero dB

It's a quite unbelievable collection of re-workings of other peoples songs and has some of the best double bass work I've ever heard.

Always worth digging up some Charles Mingus.

Try Charlie Haden, some excellent CD's on the NAIM label and very well produced.

Steve Berry (ex Loose Tubes) is a great guy and has produced some very interesting music of his own and for others.

IanS1's mention of Charlie Haden just reminded me there's some great cello playing by Jenny Adejayan on the Antonio Forcione Quartet's recordings, on the Naim Label. Try Touch Wood or AFQ Live.
