After owning quite a few CD players with different Chips and auditioning various DACs I can say that any well known chip in Audiophile quality designed Tube DAC is worth to listen. The difference between chips implementation in CD players and dedicated DACs especially Tube output design DACs is entirely different league. I own MB™ DAC -WM1 Tube DAC and can not ask for more. Even if it costs a bit more money its worth to listen to, your music wouldn`t sound the same.

Mykhail's first language is evidently not English, but if what he's saying that not all dac chips are made equal he's probably right. Note that Chord essentially design their own dac chips, and their dacs like the Hugo have been universally acclaimed by both reviewers and customers alike.

my view for what it's worth is..they seem similar to me..i tested two of my cd players and my amps dac..so three different dacs went through my system..boiled down to not better but different and which difference did I like the best? Believe it or not the iPod dac thru my t amp into main speakers was in a different league...(music from you tube too! Nuts I know..)

Depends which iPod, frankly the last 2 Classics sucked.

There is no way to test whether it is the DAC only that affects the sound other than having two exactly same designs with just different DAC chips (reference designs of those DAC with same/similar output stage).

Bet still it will be difficult since many DACs need different kinds of output stages like WM8741 is differential voltage output and needs a differential amplifier while PCM5102A is a line OUT and needs a normal line input amplifier. Then there are current output DACs like PCM1794A which need too many different circuits in their output stages enough to affect the sound (like I/V stage, diff amp stage and final line/headphone OUT).

I can reassure you that DACs are sounding different as well as different chips in DAC PCB boards design are sounding different. DACs sonic is also influenced by the type and quality of capacitors, resistors, interconnecting wires used in a whole DAC implementation. I'm a co-designer of professionally designed products such as Tube DACs, High End analogue and digital cables, passive and active tube pre amplifiers. Amongst product designers we have got a sort of inside circle of audiophile developers who specialising in their own works for specific products that they are perfecting over time. From time to time we get on Skype, exchange emails, talking about different music releases etc. even challenging each other with our products :) -it is all fun and that is what is should be, we have to enjoy music and make our life a bit happier please.

If anyone looking to improve their current musical gear or wanting to get it right from the start you are welcome to contact me and to come by to audition our products. You can bring your DACs, Interconnect Cables, etc. to audition in comparison to what we offer. Currently we have Tube DACs on TDA1541, Tube DAC on Burr Brown PCM1794 and on AK4399 Chips. Next month I should have a Tube DAC on ES9018 ESS Sabre chip. All of the Tube DACs can challenge anything you bring from 1K to 2K in price range as well as other products. The Wolfson WM8741 Tube DAC, Silver Passive Pre-Amp can be auditioned in south England if you happen to live there. The contact details on the web site malbru-cables.com Hopefully towards the middle of summer we should have Tube DACs on PCM PCM1798 chip and Roland`s hand made speakers that must be heard :) You should find some customers feedbacks on Roland hand made speakers that should give you an ideas of what it is. This is no mess production but individually hand made products is like a personally tailored suit that you are happy with. The best way of course is to audition your new product at your home on your own system, as you already know how it sounds any change will be instantly revealed.
