what practical roadmap should i follow to build my existing hifi system(Denon 2600 AVR with Elac Debut B6.2 bookshelf speakers) to say a 7.2 hi fi system adding components as per my budget in a phased manner..like adding surrounds, rear speakers, subwoofer floor standers, centre speakers etc.in which way should these components be added. im on the existing setup since almost 6 years and only listen to streamed music. this hifi system willl continue to play strfeamed music..am not interested in any movies etc.thanks.Anirudh

If you are only ever going to be listening to 2 channel music then there is no need to go above 2 speakers, however a subwoofer (Or 2) should definitely improve the sound when setup correctly. (I suspect your speakers are not in an optimised position if you cant move things and the subwoofer will help)

I built a 5.2 , then upgraded the amplifier (needed a phone stage so went up to 7.2) upgraded the front speakers to floor standing and moved the matched speakers to the 7.2 position. Would love a second sub when i can find where to hide it. If doing again id probably do the same but buy a 7.2 amp 1st . The cheaper 5.2 speakers front LR and rears, then upgrade the front pair to floor standers and make the "spare" speaker the 6 and 7.

Is that for a Hi-Fi system or home cinema?

Unless I am missing something, your plan doesn't make a lot of sense. There is no benefit to playing music on a 7.2 system. I have dedicated 7.1 and 2.0 systems, on the very odd occasion I listen to music on the 7.1 I listen in 2.0 or 2.1. It never sounds as good as my proper 2.0 hifi system.

If you are wedded to your receiver and don't want to change it, the best improvement you can make is add a sub.

If not, trade your amp in. not sure what the going rate is, but guess at £150. You can get a decent amp for £400 (less if you go second hand), this will be a lot cheaper than two more pairs of speakers. In time you can also add a sub, and possibly upgrade the speakers if you choose.

I play 5.2 albums on mine the upgrade to 7.2 makes sense for movies , its a hifi set up that does surround. Pink floyd albums the immersion sets are in 5.2. Any set up with 7.2 is by default surround sound "capable" If playig 2.0 2.1 then the rears can be "filler" or just off. The front speakers are the eventual key when upgrading this way.

Its not pure hfi more great movies an good music. Unless ist been recorded in 5.2 . Ive made the assumption the original poster listens to movies and wants a better music xp on the set up.

Where the heck do you get albums recorded in 5.2? Are you having a laugh?
Most multichannel SACDs are 5.1 and those have been remixed.
