Blu-ray players with built in audio delay function

Hi,

I have my blu-ray player connected to the TV via HDMI and to my surround sound via a digital coax. There is a slight lip sync problem with the sound ahead of the picture due to the TV processing.

As I am now going to replace my blu-ray player, I want to find one which has an audio delay/lip sync feature which operates on the digital optical/coax audio out. I believe some of the higher end Pioneers have this feature but I am looking to compile a shortlist of players which support it.

I had a look at the Philips BDP 9600 which does have an audio delay but only if connected to the surround sound via HDMI.

What I really need is a blu-ray player which can delay the sound output via the digital optical/coax audio out.[/b]

There doesn’t seem to be much information available in that regard

I would be grateful for any advice from members who have such a device.

No, unfortunately the amp only has an optical in and no audio delay option.

Which amp is it? I would prefer to buy a new amp if the blu ray player is working well otherwise.

It's an Arcam Alpha 10/10p with the DAVE module which does a good job on 5.1 so I don't want to replace it

Panasonic BDT500 has the option of audio delay over analogue. This may work well for you, but please confirm this before purchase.

Audio delay is quite easy, both my Panasonic BDT-310 (no analogues though) and my Onkyo 805 amp has it. The real problem is when you need to delay the video not the audio. Apparently the high end Sony bluray players have +/- audio delay. Worth a look.

I'll have a closer look at the players you mentioned. Looks like they might be suitable. I'll have to get it confirmed that the audio delay operates on the optical output of the player. The Arcam Alpha 10 DAVE module will only accept optical or coax in. It doesn't have analogue inputs.

I'll see what I can find out. It's not totally clear from the Panasonic manuals. Only reason I'm a bit wary is that I know some of the Philips blu-ray players have audio delay which only works via HDMI

Paul, as you have the 310, would you happen to know the answer?

You're missing out on HD audio unfortunately as optical or coax don't support it. It isn't clear on Panasonic's manual if it supports audio delay over optical or coax.

The 310 looks good for my purposes and is a bit more future proof with the twin HDMI outputs for when I get round to buying a new amp. In the meantime, I'm gonna have to live without HD audio.

Panasonic BDT500 has twin HDMI outputs as well and has superior audio components than the 310. By the way, 310 is an old model, now replaced by 320.

Besides, you won't need the 2nd HDMI output if you buy a new amp as all of them are now 3D capable.

Thats worth taking on board, as I use my AV amp to do all audio decodes I don't really know what the players audio is like. The 320 doesn't have the twin HDMI outs though, but as BB points out you may not need it as most amps these days are 3D compatible. The only scenario you would use it would be if you wanted to run a small daytime TV and have a second HDMI going to a projector for the fun stuff

I don't know your Arcam Alpha 10/10p with the DAVE module ampfilier at all, but does it have 5.1 or 7.1 multichannel analogue inputs? If so, there is no need for you to miss out on HD audio because the £250 Panasonic DMP BDT500 has 7.1 multichannel outputs, the only such player which costs less than £500. (Unless you can buy a Panasonic DMP-BD80 or 85 on ebay - as I did two months ago -, gumtree or AVforums, because these older players did have 7.1 outputs.)

Thanks for the advice although I'm not really looking to replace my amp at this stage. I'm just trying to confirm which blu-ray players offer an audio delay function which works on the optical/coax audio out as that is the only input my amp has.

Of course. Just pointing out that twin HDMI outputs shouldn't be your consideration in whichever scenario.
