blu-ray noise

Hi

Watching Blu-ray's using a PS3 and a decent cable connected to my 42" Philips 42PFL7603D (all the Philips useless special effects turned off). Loving the HD performance...but only 50% of the time.

Some Blurays look simply sublime while others look grainy and disappointing (spiderman 3 for example) So I'm wondering which part is causing the problem.

Is it limitations of the PS3?

The Philips?

The films themselves?

I'm going to note down some time frames of some of the worst bits for comparison but I was wondering whether in the meantime anyone could shed any light or way of improving it, or whether this is usual :)

thanks in advance.

This isn't any hardware limitations. What you're seeing is film grain. It's where movies have been shot using real film, as opposed to digital cameras.

I'm not an expert but its only what I've picked up from my friends who are studying film production.

The movies you have no problem with, will most probably have been shot using digital techniques and so therefore you won't get any grain.

Hi,

I have done quite a few installs now and I have found that several things can make the grain appear worse, though the films themselves can be terrible for it- The worst I have seen is the film 300, yet it is hailed as a must own bluray.

However, simply ensuring good cables, well clear of anything that can induce picture noise ( wireless equipment included ) helps no end, meaning you only see grain where the film maker intended it. And don't forget, as good as the PS3 is, it is a games machine. Try a decent dedicated player, something like a Panasonic BD35 and you start to realize there is even more potential.

I found the first scene of the "sandman" in spider3 awful on the PS3, then tried it on my Denon dvd2500BT and it handled it totally differently. On the whole I wouldn't say that Spiderman3 is bad for grain. Some of the scenes in Casino Royal on the otherhand...........

thanks for the replies :)

300, casino Royale, spiderman 3 are3 of the worst offenders :(

I feared it might be the PS3 especially as spiderman 3 is on skyHD atm and seems less noisey! It would be a shame to have to replace the PS3 especially as it was free :( but I guess if I want the quality I have to pay the money :(

At least I know it's not me lol

I believe the grainy look of '300' is deliberate. Every film has grain (if it's actually made on film, and not digitally), as that's what the image is composed of! Some films are grainier than others. I think it would be terrible if all films were 'de-grained' for Blu-ray, just to make them look 'better'.

yea Wall-e and Cars are simply sumptuous, the detail and clarity is just stunning :) which is in part why it's so disapointing when you suddenly get grainy/noisy sky's in films.

I was actually wondering whether it wassomething to do with the conversionts because most blu-rays that i have that have come out in the last 6 months look great and its mainly the older films that look a bit poor.

There's another, fairly long-winded, thread regarding conversions. The conclusion was that different films have different qualities for one reason or another. I think it's fair to say that not all films are going to look brilliant on blu-ray (although, in theory, they should).

Mine's a 40w4500 too. They're impressive beasts. Not sure what all the fuss is about regarding bad picture???

Yes, I love mine! If it's calibrated properly then the 'milkiness' or light bleed is rarely noticeable, even in a darkened room (which is how I like to watch films).

Even expanses of the same colour/tone tend to look grainy on film, even on 35mm slides it's where you'd really notice it. And it's true that films had coarser grain in the past. And it's not just Blu-ray or DVD. I used a Sony laserdisc player about 10 years ago, and grey skies in particular looked very patterned on that - but the same discs looked fine on a Pioneer player! (They were both top of the range models.)
