Blu-Ray Disc Problem...

Not sure where to post this really but am having an old issue and I'm wondering if anyone else has had similar!

In having a fairly new but thoroughly run-in Plasma I've been attempting calibration (will post thoroughly on this at some point when work quietens down!) - of course I like to use test material to check the results. I haven't got masses of Blu-Rays really so Casino Royale is probably still my best all-round reference point, but there's a problem, it won't play. Now this is a fairly standard problem as disc/player issues go but it's left me confused...

I have an original PS3 as my Blu-Ray player, it has always worked perfectly and plays every other disk with no problem. The Casino Royale disc was my first Blu-Ray and used to play fine - now the PS3 doesn't even register it when I put it in, literally - there's not even a whir from the drive. Obviously I decided to check the disc and here's where confusion sets in - it's perfect! Like a mirror. No dust, no smudges and certainly no scratches.

Anyone have any ideas what's going on? Had similar problems? I'm a little concerned that an apparently perfect disc won't register, especially since all the other discs work fine (as did this one originally) - will others develop the same problem? Of course the simplest solution is to try it somewhere else - but I always forget to take it to mate's places and I'm on the forum now so figured this would be as good a place as any to start! [:D] Hardly a life-threatening issue I know!

*I may have posted similar to this in the past but I can't remember what forum that was on [:(]

*also meant to post this in the "Home Cinema", not TV forum! [:D]

I also have an original PS3 and Casino Royale was also my first BD purchase (both bought on launch day in the UK). Have just tried my Casino Royale and it works fine - I'm on the latest firmware update, and assume you are too?

I did have a similar instance like this but with a game - the original Motorstorm I got with the console just suddenly stopped working and I couldn't get the PS3 to see the disc for love nor money. This is the only time it has ever happened (probably over a year ago now) so my assumption was it was an issue with the disc, though again, there wasn't anything wrong that I could see from looking at it.

Yeah, latest firmware here too.

There must be something amiss that triggers the drive into life that's not being picked up on inserting the disc I guess - drives and lasers aren't really my thing unfortunately!

AEJim,

Both myself and a very good friend of mine have had this issue but not with Casino Royale on BD and it was this that finally prompted me to get a stand alone BD player and a PS3 slim BUT a few weeks ago the plot thickened with the latest firmware update....my friends original 'fat' ps3 suddenly decided to start playing BD's again when for the past few months it would either not register that a BD was in it atall or get a little way into the movie and freeze completely with no option but to restart the movie and hope it played to the end.

The only variable was the firmware update but as i remember he had several updates which done nothing to the BD playback yet the most recent one somehow seems to have fixed the issue but i have absoluetly no idea how or why just thought the info may be useful to you

I wish i kept my 'fat' ps3 now so i could check it myself!

Thanks Oldboy!

I may relegate the PS3 back to the man room on the projector - it's far better at upscaling than the X-Box I have in there in anycase! It's not exactly second mortgage funds required to buy a stand-alone Blu-Ray player nowadays

still would like to get it working, I'm one of those people that when something bugs me I have to fix it, or break it more trying!

I'm totally with you there...my need to fix or throw out has got the better of me plenty of times but when it came to the PS3 i just felt it was beyond my limited 'poke around untill something happens' capabilities! Plus i wanted a slim and seperate BD player and had the perfect excuse of course....and as you say with a good BD player costing as little as £100-£200 it's not 2nd mortgage time.

Fingers crossed it sparks into life by itself at some point

Have you tried unplugging it from the mains for about a minute ?...I've found some issues like these work for me, DVD and blu-ray players are a bit like computers and every now and then they need a re-boot.

Yeah, I've moved it several times over the last month or so and this problem came up before that, did a complete reset too...
