Have got chilled Guinness and AC DC Live! on the Sony 370 and the SQ is really very good - I assume BR is audio 'equivalent' to SA-CD..? i.e. in terms of sample rate, data rate etc..
 
Bluray is capable of full 24 bit 8 channel audio (Although your definitely not guaranteed to get audio quality quite that high)

SACD is 20 bit 6 channel

It does get a lot more complicated than that, but theres the basics
 
And originally was stereo only. The whole multichannel thing happened when the home cinema thing kicked off in the early 2000s.

And all the better for it.

I got my demo Opus Arte Opera/Ballet blu ray recently. And was blown away by the sound quality. The video was pretty amazing too, for the record.
