Blockbuster In Administration.

Another day, another High Street name disappears. A total of 528 stores and 4,190 staff. I wonder who it'll be tomorrow. Before long there will only be hi-fi shops left!!!

Well that really isn't a surprise they've been hopeless fro years and from what I can see did very little when the likes of Lovefilm and Netflix entered the market. Happy to be correct though if it isnt that.

I had no idea they were still around! It must be over 20 years since I last saw one.

Who rents DVDs any more? (Ok, obviously not many.)

Well, the US parent has already almost gone bang at least once, most notably in 2011 when it filed for Chapter 11 protection with debts of $900m, citing the rise of Netflix and similar operations as the cause. There were plans by the new owner to turn it into a Netflix-type set-up, but they were scrapped last Autumn, IIRC.

Funny, someone just said that in the office, and it turns out everyone in the office seems to know where their nearest one is. And there are/were at least half a dozen within a few miles of our office, it seems.

It was only a matter of time, just like HMV.

You can usually find your local branch by sense of smell - the local branch smells like our teenage boy's bedroom, but on a much bigger scale. Ewwwhh!

err me, well not anymore apparently.

Not sure where else you can get latest releases from, Netflix, Lovefilm only have old films on demand. iTunes, Sony Entertainment are more expensive than renting a blu-ray from blockbusters (or the library) what other choices are there ?

Now TV (Sky). Bloody expensive though, imo.

Well thats my saturday night down the pan, I rent at least 2 a week! I only hire Blu-ray, mainly for The sound, Dolby True HD and DTS M A HD, am I right in presuming the Download sites only offer Dolby Digital?

Well in fairness they are keeping the shops open for now.

Go for Lovefilm - we get three films at a time on blu-ray where available, and seem to get the new releases pretty quickly.

If you've got a good broadband, then the streaming seems to have improved a lot over the past year or so.

We only use Blockbuster when we've been over-esoteric in the Lovefilm selection, and have nothing to watch as a family on Friday night.

Ewwwhh indeed, that's nasty!

I reckon I've got to be one of the few people who's never actually set foot in a Blockbuster store, I certainly couldn't tell you where my nearest one is (was?). As per other failed companies though, I feel very sorry for the staff, not a good time for the retail business.

I do, and i'm a for the moment kind of guy. I don't have enough bandwidth for streaming a film via the web, is that what happens now? This is most annoying |(

Old women and smelly man in ours.

In the news article Blockbusted! , it says "The core of the business is still profitable"..

Anyone know what exactly the "core business" of this video and game rental company is, and why didn't they just stick to what was profitable?

I assumed their core business was video and game rental 🙂

Me. That'll hurt me...

Me too. And to quote myself:

Hopefully someone can educate me on this one.

See, I'm annoyed about this because my nearest branch is only a short walk away and my lifestyle is such that I am pretty much able to rent what I want when I want and see the latest films (if I have not already seen them at the cinema).

Now, peopel are saying that they are in this situation due to the prevalence of online services but...can anyone tell me which online service has the very latest releases (Netflix does not, I can't speak for LoveFilm)?! And even the TV channels have to wait to get films until they are released on BluRay and DVD anyway, and that's at teh very earliest...

So, have I missed a service?

I thought people used LoveFilm online (or equivalent) to get DVDs sent to them though the post. Personally, I just buy what i want to watch when the price has dropped.

I want to rent a film when I feel like it, not when Lovefilm deign to send it to me. And usually I only want to watch that one film at very short notice, and usually the kids want to watch one too.

I am going to go and rent a film this weekend to try and keep them in business.

Soon we'll have to go out actually buy them from a shop, can you imagine? I use acetrax as its on wdtv live for the latest films, it's no blu ray but its ok when it works. Shame about BB really, I only cancelled as I had ran out of things to watch but planned to go back when some decent films had built up again. Had nothing but problems with lovefilm however.

I've not rented a film from a shop in many years, but does the situation not still arise when all copies of a particular film are out? I also heard people on the radio today complaining of the lack of new releases in blockbuster.

I've only ever not been sent a 'high priority' film with lovefilm once (Berberian Sound Studio, which is only just out). True, you can't pick a film up on a whim, but they've always sent them out promptly and if you plan properly you'll pretty much always have a film from them you want to watch, when you want to watch it.
