I currently have a Panasonic BD30 connected to a Yamaha DSP AZ1 amp.

I want to get HD sound but don't know which way to go.

Do i upgrade the BD30 to say a BD50 and connect it to the Yamaha using the analogue inputs or do i keep the the BD30 and upgrade to an amp which will decode the sound formats.

Which route will give me the best sound?

Hmmm, are you thinking of sticking to a budget? I think the BD50 upgrade will be the cheaper option to get HD audio as the Yamaha was a very good AV amp. However, I recently upgraded my Denon AVC-A1SE (which was from around the same time period as your Yamaha) to an Onkyo 905 and it really was head and shoulders better than the Denon, even with standard Dolby Digital / DTS soundtracks from DVDs. If you can look at an amp at around that level (and price) I would definitely audition a few and see what you think most improves the sound.

Thanks for taking the time to reply.

I was actually thinking of the 905 or 875 receivers from Onkyo and Yamaha V3800 or Denon 3808.

I'll probably wait til the replacements for the 2 Onkyos appear then go and have a listen to all of them.
