I have a Kenwood X-85 cassette deck, which mechanically works fine, however the digital display has stopped working. Does anyone have any thoughts on why this has happened and what steps I can take to repair it?

It could be a bad connection or a faulty display/diver, so the only thing you can do is drop it off to a repair centre and have them take a look at it, depending on the age there may or may not be parts available for it.

That's why I would be opening it up*, based on the theory of "Why not?"
Don't do it if you don't know how to avoid where the live mains is.....or if you haven't got a soldering iron.
Otherwise, while it's powered up, push around gently (with an insulated prod) in and around the soldered connections of the display (if they're accessible).

*The first thing any (good) repairer does after removing a cover, is a thorough visual inspection - sometimes the causes of problems are obvious.
Though I fear the display itself may be faulty in this case.
